Elk calling scenario

Ok so I've been listening to various podcasts and watching videos etc.  One common factor I see is in the setup.  You've located got your shooter in position and you're the caller. You've got a nice bull with some cows and you're trying to lure him in to your setup with some cow talk and bugling of various sorts (challenge bugle etc).

One thing I've noticed is that you want to either play to the breeding or fighting side. That being said, you're in position and cow call and the bull seems interested either vocally or starts moving but starts to hang up or is not very motivated.

My specific question is- will trying to elicit a response from the bull, by portraying that these cows and bull are moving off and he's missing out  by either the caller moving a spot further even 10-15 yards or projecting calls behind the caller help?

What are your opinions or scenarios yeilded?

I understand the setup and the calling, but circumstantially are there any tactics anyone has tried or noticed works for that extra little needle in his side to get him in.

Hey Kdkehoe!

Great question, and common scenario when calling to herd bulls. Be sure and read through Module 9 Chapter 3 in the University of Elk Hunting....there are 5 or 6 options for "Calling an Audible" when the bulls hang up, including the Retreat, Slingshot, Triangle, etc.

Also, in the Supplements to Calling chapter (Module 10, Chapter 1) there are a few other tactics that will work in this exact scenario.

Thanks, and good luck!
