I just heard about this forum the other day so I thought I would sign up and join in, looks to be a good place. I realize this is my first post, but I figured I\'d give it a shot, so here it goes.

I drew and archery tag for unit 40 in Colorado. I know a bit about the unit as I have friends that have hunted it for elk and deer, but only in the late seasons. I was wondering if anyone here had any experience on the unit in September. I was hoping to run a couple ideas I have past some people that have hunted it. I appreciate any help that is offered.

And like I said, I know its my first post so if no response I understand as well. Sometimes it takes a while to warm up to people and see if they are just fishing for info or will contribute anything.

Welcome Straight6,

Glad you could make it over here.
We are always excited when new people join our little forum.

There are lots of great guys around here and I am almost positive that one or some guys will have experience with unit 40.

Another recommendation that I have is take a look at our announcements up on top of the elk forum page.
You will see a contest for \"Startmyhunt Map giveaways\"

Mike has created these fantastic maps for Colorado and they are loaded with great information.
Well we are giving some away! Nothing wrong with free stuff :upthumb:

Welcome again and please enjoy,

Daniel

Welcome Mr. 6. I am glad you found your way into camp. We are an easy going bunch, but you need to keep an eye on the pranksters like Cnelk and John Fitzgerald. Pick out an empty chair for yourself and pour your own coffee. I am sorry I know nothing about unit 40, but I am sure there are some here that do. I suspect they are off scouting on the weekend, so information may come slowly. Anyway welcome and good luck.

Welcome to the site!

I haven\'t hunted 40 so not too much help here.
I\'m sure with the intel you have from your rifle buddies you can find the elky spots as the elk should be there during archery.

Tell us a bit more about yourself, i.e. what bow do you shoot? What part of the country do you hail from?

Glad to have you here!

Another welcome to you Straight6!

I also have not hunted unit 40, but have heard a lot of good things about it, especially during archery season. Dan mentioned the StartMyHunt maps. That could be a great start to your hunt, and very affordable as well. Are you familiar with the CPW hunting atlas mapping system? That can be very helpful as well. If you are not familiar with it, here is a link with some information I posted about a while back: http://www.backtrakoutdoors.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=617&p=6971&hilit=+cpw+atlas#p6971

I hope that helps!

Thanks for the welcome guys and the tips for the maps. I never know how to do and introduction on a new forum, sometime it feels like I\'m filling a profile for a dating website or something. Kinda creepy, oh well, here it goes: I live in northern Utah and mainly hunt deer and elk. Not much of a bird hunter anymore, I choose to shed hunt instead. I have hunted CO, WY, ID, MT, NV, and of course UT. This is my 3rd, of what I consider \"good\" elk tags. I drew a Pahvant tag in \'05 in UT, and a unit 72 tag in NV in \'11, both were incredible hunts. I am now shooting a Hoyt Carbon Spyder ZT Turbo this year and have fallen in love with this bow. Just working up some new arrows for it now.

Welcome aboard! I\'ve never been to the great state of CO but I\'ve always wanted to. Good luck with your hunt!

I never hunted unit 40 but knew a guy who lives in Utah that hunts it every chance he gets. He kills big bulls every time. The biggest obstacle which you probably know about is almost the entire unit is private. You are going to want a very accurate property map because the landowners around there do not consider ignorance an excuse if you are caught trespassing. The other thing I have been told is to get used to hunting around other people. Not necessarily other hunters, just other recreationists. If you can afford to hire a guide or a trespass fee, it might be worth it. You are going to have a very limited amount of public land to hunt, but guys still find elk.

First,

Thanks for the recommendations above about my maps. Unfortunately, unit 40 is an area where my data is not going to help you out much because there is not much available. As Andy said above, staying on public land is going to be your biggest concern. The public and private land is very fragmented. Send me a PM with your phone number and I will give you an accurate land ownership map at a reduced price once we discuss the area you plan on hunting.

Mike
