Is your bow and arrow equipment tuned and ready? I have been checking and mine appears to be as near perfect as I can make it. The broadheads hit consistently and at the same place as my field points. They are as near the bulls eye as I can shoot. I feel ready to go.
Are you willing and comfortable saying what you think about topics in question on this forum? Is it okay to be wrong? Does it bother you to be alone in your opinion, or in a small minority. I am just wondering.
I would like to see more questions from newbies, and read some, \"I don\'t...
It is still a few days before you leave home to set up elk camp. Hunting season is not far behind. You have scouted two good areas this year and have a tough decision to make. One area has lots of fresh and old sign. Elk live there until they get pushed away. You see elk in this area on a...
Archery season is due to begin soon. I have been practicing and feel I am about ready. My shooting is back to where I expected it to be. I am not a great shot. I will shoot out to 40 yards on a deer or an elk. I don\'t like an excessive risk of wounding an animal. How far are you prepared...
I have been hearing about the High Heel Hottie for awhile now and decided I wanted to get one for my son Luke, and his overgrown delinquent friend. They both love to call elk and spend some time with their feet firmly planted on the ground. Last season Luke (Olympushunt) shot a nice 5x5 after...
Cow Calling
Postby Swede ? Fri Jun 20, 2014 8:02 am ? [Post 1]
There is a lot of discussion and even some training on how to bugle for elk. I have a couple of old Larry D. Jones audio tapes and went to one of his seminars in 1991. The troupe of people following what he started and building...
John asked about our likes and dislikes as it pertains to the current elk forum. This is a little different. I would like to hear from you about things you would like to see happen on the forum, things we should avoid and pet peeves as it relates to the forum. I probably don\'t need to add...
I am going to be hunting with a friend and some by myself. ( hypothetical) We want to call in a bull elk this September. I have heard some good cow and bull calls, but I am wondering where I should do my calling from and what are places to avoid? I have heard elk can be real difficult to...
You know you are in an area that is likely to have elk. You want to locate one or some and don\'t want to spook any. What things other than the wind do you think about, and do, or manage to improve your opportunity to kill one?
What do you consider when deciding where to hang your trail camera? I generally prefer water holes at locations I might place a tree stand. This July I missed a great opportunity when I failed to have a camera with me when I went out scouting a couple places, but I will be back five days...
I am wondering what your hunting plans are. It will be our secret. The Lord willing, I plan to leave August 25 for hunting camp. The season opens August 30 and lasts for 30 days. I plan to primarily go after elk, but if a descent buck comes around, he may not survive. A cougar is still on...
I have always been the curious type and am willing to try new things. Sometimes they are an improvement to my gear collection or add to my skill level. Sometimes things I buy end up laying laying around, until I clean up my hunting room. Some things have a place with me in camp or on the...
I am a little anxious to start another thread on whether to wait or walk. This is intended as a comparison to see if changing the situation should be reflected in a change of hunting strategy. In this second scenario should I wait or walk?
It is 6:30AM on September 7th. We left camp over an...
It is September 7th. There are elk in the area I am hunting, but they have been quiet, and there is not a lot of fresh sign. Often the elk come suddenly and then go in a day or two leaving behind only a few residuals. I expect more to return at any time.
I started calling just before day...
How far was the longest elk tracking job you can remember, and was it successful?
I believe the farthest I ever had to follow an elk was 500-600 yards est. Actually Olympushunt led the search and found the bull. It was the first elk I ever shot twice before it took off. The second arrow was...
What is the most fun part of a preseason scouting trip for you?
It is hard to determine for me. Seeing a new area is high on my list, so is experiencing the excitement of a great looking tree stand location with the fresh smell of elk. Maybe it is the smell of steaks grilling at the end of...
How much time do you pour over maps and Google Earth, studying a new hunting area before you put boots on the ground? What do you look for?
I am looking at a new area, as the one I have hunted has been going down hill for the last ten years or so.
I just got to thinking about a question I was asked the other day. Would I shoot a sasquatch if one walked near my tree stand while I was waiting there. Would you?
I have some decoys that are made of just a painted sheet of burlap that has been cut out in the form of a headless elk silhouette. I hang them up using baling twine. I have a commercial decoy that is also just two dimensional. These crazy decoys can work for you or against you. I have had...
