That’s funny. My dad says he’s busier now too. He still makes time for fishing. Before he did it on weekends. Now he does it whenever he can as long as it’s not on a weekend.
In his defense he’s old. We went out today. Hiked 7 miles. Lots of elk tracks but no elk. We got almost to where I thought elk would be and we saw a truck parked at the bottom of the hill we were headed to. A forester was counting trees. He said he hadn’t seen anything. That’s probably the end...
My mom had an any weapon tag this year. My dad went with her several times. The season ended today. They saw a lot of sign in a couple areas but no elk. Lots of people. My dad has the same tag I had. It has a short any weapon season that starts tomorrow. He’s going fishing instead. I’m going...
Is anyone hunting for anything around here? It’s been awfully quite for a while. I’m going out for deer starting in about a week but I won’t get too serious about it until the rut which for us will be around early to mid November.
Thanks everyone. We cut up the whole elk and brought all of it out like we normally would. It all looked fine when it came off the carcass but I could smell that it wasn’t all fine in the game bags. We got it home and broke everything down and started smelling the meat as it came off and...
Here’s mine from yesterday. I thought I hit him well but after waiting 1/2 hour I tracked him and jumped him about 60 yards from where I shot him. I was able to hit him again as he was leaving but it wasn’t a good hit. Then it began to rain. I lost the blood trail and the tracks. We found him...
Thanks. I’m pretty sure his best antler days were behind him. I’m not much for antler scores but I’m guessing he would only score 100-110. He’s got pretty nice mass all around and he’s 20” wide but pretty short tines. I thought about passing on him until he got closer and I could see enough of...
It was actually great. I think he was old enough that he just napped all day and got real tender. It wasn't gamey and he didn't really smell like a rutted up whitetail even though his neck was huge and he was following a doe when I shot him.
I'm sitting at my computer opening day. BOOOO. I had two days I could hunt this weekend and I was up with food poisoning till after 1 am. I am going tomorrow Aug. 31. Then I have to work Sunday and Monday. I'm too behind on work projects to take off time for Labor Day. If I work now hopefully...
Most of the things you mentioned are true. North slopes and getting away from people and all that. I would do what works whether others are doing that or something entirely different. I hear people say that elk are call shy where I hunt but I call in elk every year and get responses easily. They...
I shot this deer last year. I posted it on this website somewhere. I knew he was old but I didn't think he would be 11. We get pretty hard winters and we have mountain lions and wolves as well as grizzlies and black bears. Not to mention an ever increasing number of hunters. I wouldn't have...
Yes to everything cohunter14 said. If there is sign there then they are using it but it could be a place they use in the summer or later in the fall. I cover ground until I find fresh tracks. Seeing and hearing them is good too but if they aren't in the open or talking then those options might...
Just my home state of Idaho for OTC elk and deer. Probably turkeys and ducks at some point too.
Days? As many as possible. I don't normally schedule any work during September but I'm behind on a few things so I will have to work during part of it. Our elk season is a month long then I have...
Check and change batteries in a few things. I should probably see how old my bear spray is. I don't know if it loses propellant or the spice loses its potency. Maybe nothing goes wrong with it but I always like to have one that is within it's use by date. Especially with as many grizzlies as we...
