    Rubs

So ... do they really mean all that much practically? I mean, other than telling you elk were \"here\" once ... like tracks and poop tells you ... do they change your plans?

    FOBs

Well, because I\'ve had some issues with wind in the past, I decided to try FOBs again. A quiet morning (wind-wise) let me get out and get things set-up for this. After a quick-tune, I\'m hitting a 9\" Rhinehart ball at 60 yards. The wind came up this afternoon, but it\'s tough to test...

    Finally got out and about

Well, the wind, amazingly, was down today, and though there were some flurries, and not much sun, I was headed out. Cabin fever be damned. The USFS has finally noticed that spring is when \"new roads\" appear, going around snow drifts, and so they\'ve shut off access to the unit closest to...

    First Aid Kits

Bullnuts thought maybe it was time to start a thread about First Aid (from his post on the \"Tips\" thread) ... and I thought I\'d start things out. First off ... I am NOT an Army medic, or a paramedic, and I have not completed a Wilderness First Responder course. I do have a medical degree...

    night vision

    Suppose B&C and P&Y will go for NIGHT VISION CONTACT LENSES? <!-- m --><a class=\"postlink\" href=\"http://www.wired.com/2014/04/night-vision-contact-lenses/\">http://www.wired.com/2014/04/night-visi ... ct-lenses/</a><!-- m --> You know, I may have to draw a line here myself!

    Help plan my menu

My wife and I are planning a 1 week trip into the Wind River Mountains this summer, and I\'m open to advice on what to bring for food. Let me list some of the issues: Weight -- not a huge issue. We\'ll have a pack horse to carry camp. Refrigeration -- this will be an issue. We will be far...

Elk Hunting Forum - Challenging versus flirting

OK, it\'s been discussed here that Corey J likes to challenge bulls. He does that, I guess, because, like Still Hunter ... that\'s what his dad taught him. I\'m not really wanting to discuss what anyone\'s dad taught him in this thread. I\'d like to know what you are seeing, hearing, and...

    Pref points

GOOD NEWS! I went to buy my Colorado preference points today and ... I remembered wrong ... I thought I only had 7 for deer and elk, but I have 8, soon to be 9. (Not that there\'s a lot of difference between them unless point-banking shows up, but it\'s better than a kick!)

    Ground Blinds and debris shelters

Swede will tell us (I think he\'ll likely tell anyone and everyone) that ambush hunting is under-rated as a tactic. But, hunting alone, far from the road ... treestand hunts do have a level of risk that I\'m not real happy with. (They also have a level of weight that I\'m not real happy with!)...

    What makes a BAD hunt?

We\'ve had discussion of the \"perfect\" hunt ... what are some real deal-killers? For me: A wounded animal is the worst thing that can happen. Annoying people in camp are kind of a downer. Bad weather is pretty disappointing. Not that I can\'t handle it, but decent weather really lifts moods...

    Bear Bags

I don\'t like bears in camp ... but I really don\'t think there is a great way to guard against it. I mean, after watching this video, I\'m not sure a bear bag is all that helpful: <!-- m --><a class=\"postlink\"...

    I hate indoor shooting

So ... I went outdoor shooting. It seems to be a settled issue that Cabin Fever is at its peak right now ... and with a new string, my bow isn\'t sighted-in, or tuned, and I HATE indoor shooting. So ... who cares that it\'s cold, and the wind is whipping at about 25 mph with gusts to 35 right...

    Homemade Targets

I\'m thinking of getting some burlap bags, filling them with something, and making \"beach ball-sized\" targets to toss out in my pasture. I can get a 12-pack of decent, vital-zone-sized bags for < $10 ... But what to fill them with? I\'d intend to shoot them with field points, and this...

    Long Winter

Anyone else sick of winter yet? This time of year is pretty limiting on outdoor opportunities ... today, we\'ve got temps of around 25 with winds of 20+. It\'d be nice to get out and ride, and we\'ll do some work with the horses later, but geez, it\'s not real comfortable. Cabin fever has set...

    Plays

In another thread, I talked about how I think in \"football terms\" of \"plays\" to run while hunting. These would include the \"Corey Jacobsen\" ... which WW and Swede described ... it is briefly summarized like this: 1. Locate a bull with bugling 2. Silently get close 3. Soft cow call 4...

Elk Hunting Forum - Lone Hunter Tactics

Share what you know about how to close the deal without a caller 50 yards behind you. (Swede ... I\'m primarily talking about us ground-dwellers  I know you will say that hunting alone might best be done by hunting \"above\").

Elk Hunting Forum - Treestand calling

This one is just to get Swede\'s interest! I\'ve now heard a couple folks say that they call from treestands. Tell me more. (And Swede, here\'s your opening to opine on this as well!)

Elk Hunting Forum - Call him, or go to him?

Mid-September, 9 a.m. and you\'re moving in a dark-timbered drainage. You hear an unsolicited bugle downstream, probably on the other side, maybe 300 yards (maybe less, maybe more, you can\'t tell) away. Wind is nil, and thermals seem perpendicular to the line between you and the bull. You...

    Homemade Firestarters

Looking for better ideas for homemade firestarters. Last year, I used vaseline-soaked cotton packed into large straws, heat-sealed on each end. This actually worked pretty well, though I think I made them a little small. But, before I go making more this winter, (yep, still winter here), I\'m...
