I have been back from elk camp for 3 weeks and it is time to plan for next year. Most of the scrapes and bruises have healed and after 4 weeks about half of the feeling has come back to my big toes. I am starting my workout for next year earlier than normal, which is usually January. I plan on being in the best shape I have ever been in when I hit the mountains in only 11 months. I think next year will be full bivy. No spike or base camp. I hope to get in a scouting trip if time permits. It is a lot harder to scout when you live 1000 miles away... Who else has started to get into better elk hunting shape for next year? :train:

I starting to think about it, does that count? actually I need to start soon, I was reminded last night that I have a 1/2 ironman coming up in july.....

Since I quit doing obstacle races I have a harder time going to a gym to workout. The races were leading to more and more injuries from over training and in the end I was missing more and more workouts due to injuries. I won\'t risk that for elk season. The only issue I had this year was late in Sept and that was cardio. I had been doing a significant amount of hiking through out the season but got my butt handed to me on a very tired silver platter on my last trip out. Some of those hills were brutally steep. The only thing I\'ll do differently this next year is spend more time on my mountain bike. That cardio is almost exactly like hunting for me...huge hill, burn the lungs for 20 minutes, then recoup...rinse and repeat. I didn\'t do nearly as much mtn biking this year due to personal issues where my time was better spent elsewhere. Those should be resolved sooner than later so I look forward to it.

Funny thing, as Sept went on I was weighing myself often. I started the season at 163 lb and finished at 152 lb. Throughout the weeks though I was gaining a few pounds, probably water weight. Up, down, Up, down... It\'s given me a good platform to build from with my home gym. Hopefully the weight I put back on will be muscle and not beer. :)

Lark, what OCRs were you doing? I\'ve gotten way into those the past few years. Had never done any sort of race until I started doing these in 2011. did my first half marathon last year. I liked it and may do more, but I love the added challenge that OCRs bring, and the breakup of monotonous running. Training for those has kept kept me motivated to train most of the year. Yeah, the risk of injury is there, but almost anything fun has that, right? :)

when i take a break, i tend to grow roots..i havent stopped since my Idaho elk hunt in 2012..i just keep running, biking, and mountain biking.

only way to keep from getting fat and slow. my hunting partners are amazed at the change in me..i can keep up with them now. my knees are sore from trail running, so for the past 3 days, i have been mountain biking. the pedaling seems to alleviate knee pain..bonus!!

I started a few weeks ago. Using the eliptical with a lot of resistance. It seems to burn my legs the same way the mountains did. Started doing situps (I hate those) and lifting weights. I have gained about 6 pounds since I started not sure if it muscle or not. I went to the deer woods yesterday and hung one stand then helped my cousin clear a road. I felt pretty good and may be in a little better shape than I was during my hunt. My knee has held up really good but my hip has started hurting more. I will talk to my doctor about it when I have my knee follow up.

My knee is still popping when I straighten it. It has been doing it for 3 months now. The chiro says it is getting better. I don\'t have the pains I used to in it. I will do some biking and see if it helps loosen things up. I know the hills make the legs burn more than the walking with a pack.

I\'m only two weeks away from the elk hunt, and i\'m not working out. I\'ve never been this unfit for an elk hunt my whole life. I\'ve been trying to rest my knee to see if it would heal up. It\'s not really working, but I suppose it\'s better than when I was working it. It can\'t handle any kind of incline climb. How can I hunt elk like that? Not a lot of level ground elk hunting that I know of.

Cripes! I\'m turning into a whining old man. I need to grit my teeth, and ignore my swelled up dumb knee.

hip? oh check out youtube on stretching the hip. the videos look really awkward. you have to use a foam roller tube, and it WILL look like you are trying to dry-hump it. but it works. i was so worried about my sore hip. the roller felt like the most painful massage EVER (imagine your body weight pushing your muscle into a hard foam roller)..but i breathed thru the pain and it diminished as i worked out the muscle. i havent had hip pain since..sometimes if i feel it may come up..i dry hump the roller again. :)

my phys ed friend tells me that most hip pain is some tendon/muscle pulling your leg out of alignment or something...same with some knee pain.
