Before he died last year, Dad won a raffle: a .308 Win. I\'ll use it this fall for pronghorn, cow elk, and mule deer. I am finding I don\'t have time to work up a load, so I need some recommendations for factory loads.

i dont know, never shot a 308. but, cool your hunting with that rifle and hope you bags lots of critters with it.

John, I think a lot just depends on what you are trying to do with it and how far you plan on shooting it. If I remember correct, I think you are a pretty good shot and have taken some game at some solid distances. If that\'s the plan, I would look at something like the Nosler Trophy Grade ammo in the 165gr Accubond. That Accubond is a solid bullet for both close and far distance. Obviously there are other options as well, including the Barnes ammo and the HSM ammo, which are made with Berger bullets. I have heard good things about the Barnes bullets, but haven\'t used them. They are more of a penetrating bullet that doesn\'t expand as much. The Berger\'s are on the opposite side of things...they can make soup out of the vitals. The Accubond seems to be a good in-between on those.

Of course, if you aren\'t interested in spending that kind of money for bullets, the good ol\' Remington Core Lokt will always do the trick and has been for years. I\'m just saying if I was a doctor and had money falling out of my pockets, I\'d go with the accubonds

Funny you say that! I have a friend who really does have money falling from his pockets (unlike me -- I\'m not a SURGEON, for crying out loud) ... and he uses ... wait for it ...

Remington Core-Lokt bullets. For everything. And ...

They work.

Hate to admit it. Like wearing Wranglers while hunting ... Core-Lokt bullets just plain work.

But ... I\'m enough of a snob to keep your ideas about the Accu-bond in mind.

Anyone with any Hornady options? I\'m a Nebraska boy, after all.

In my experiences with Hornady (with my .308 or .270) I always found an inconsistency.
I could buy 3 boxes of the same ammo and they would be all over the place.

These were from a lead sled too, so not operator error.
It wasn\'t bad enough where I wouldn\'t shoot it, I just didn\'t like how much it was off each shot.

These other brands that Derek mentioned were like night and day from the Hornady.

John
I use Hornady bullets when I reload and I too like their performance.

But since you are going with factory ammo, I would choose Winchester or Federal brand.
I have bought my fair share of factory ammo and I have had nothing go wrong with these two brands.

Bullets size?
The 165gr mentioned is prob the best choice for the \'all around\' stuff you gonna shoot.

I would do this tho, since the gun is older, get some copper cleaner and clean the bore real good.
It makes a world of difference.

always have had good luck with the core lok seems to shoot well if you can find it the Winchester supreme with the silver ballistic tips have shot really well in most guns the .30 cal ballistic tip is a thicker cup its not the same as the varmint exploder bullets that most think. in fact a buddy shot a bull with a 180 grain silvertip out of his 300wm at 71 yards through both shoulders we found a nice mushroom just under the hide on the far side. the 308 isn\'t gonna be screaming these bullets either so as far as any of that is concerned accuracy would be the winner. I would try several different boxes and whatever shot the best would be what I would be taking.

I prefer the nosler or barns...

Im not on that whole berger hype :downthumb:

I wasn\'t either...until I started shooting them. The accuracy is unbelievable  We\'ll hopefully see how they do on game this year. The reports on the bullet I plan on using have been very good though.

Yeah, Core Lokts are not fancy by any means and are not very good for stretching the legs on a rifle, but they seem to do the job every time if you put the bullet where it\'s supposed to go.

I have had good luck with Remington Core-lokt and Fusion\'s in 165 grain. People tell me all the time that the Fusions are crap bullets but they work really good in my Browning .308

My son used a 7mm-08 with 140 grain Fusion to take his bull last fall. I thought the Fusion bullets mushroomed out great!!

I have had multiple really positve kills with .308 accubonds. They are expensive compared to the other brands but its the cheapest part of any hunt. I always laugh when people that have a trailer full of quads on a 65000 truck and say ammo is to expensive. Fuel costs alone are way more compared to a box or two of premium ammo. The kills i have made with accubonds have been form 50 to 520 meters it is a great bullet and works every time.

If you are going to shoot Federal premium ammo I also like Accubond Bullets. I use hand loaded Accubonds in my 7mm Rem Mag long range gun.
Usually not quite as accurate but also a great Premium bullet is the Nosler Partition.
