I have a marlin 1895 in 45/70 and am planning to hunt elk with it this year. I have 3 types of ammo for it and am wondering which one would be the best. I have some winchester 300gr jhp that i used on hogs this summer. I was able to recover one of the bullets(attached). It stayed completely together and penetrated about 2.5 feet. (The hog was standing facing me) it entered right behind the skull right above the left shoulder and was trapped right below the rear left hip joint under the skin. When i skinned the hog there was a stretch cavity that i could easily slip my fist into. The other ammunition choices i have are a hornady 325gr flextip and some buffalo bore 350gr jsp magnums that i bought just for kicks(no pun intended).

All of those will do the trick. Just go with the combination that gives the best first shot, cold-barrel 10X and the best 5-shot grouping.

I get the best groups with the leverevolution rounds out of my single shot. I think any would do fine as long as you're not trying to reach out too far.
