I have my choice pof 8x42 vortex or 10x50 Leupolds for this year. 90% of my hunting is spot n stalk in timber that visibility is good, anywhere from 80 to 200 yds. the vortex are a little smaller and lighter, but not much. Which would you carry and why? I use them a lot for picking up pieces and parts of elk in the timber before I bump them.

In timber I would prefer the 8X42s. Your range is out to 200 yards and you are on the move more. Probably the differences are not worth arguing about, but the *X are a little lighter, brighter, and on the move looking a lot I would expect less eye fatigue.

For the type of hunting you will be doing, I\'d pick the 8x42 every time. You never mentioned which model of either brand. And JMO, Vortex is a better glass than Leupold.

+1

I, though, would avoid whichever one was heavier as the main determinant.

This year, I\'m using a 10x Vortex monocular for elk hunting. I may even consider getting their 8x26 since it\'s < $60 (next year, we\'ll see).
