A Lemon from Ruger

My brother-in-law visit this weekend. He\'s a non-gunny kind of guy, but he announced that he was wanting to change that. And he was ready to go shopping.

Cool ... I love shopping with other people\'s money.

So, we went down to the local shop in Laramie and looked around. They had several Ruger 10/22s that -- I\'m sure you\'ll all agree -- would be a reasonable starter gun to use to discuss the aspects of everything from safety and cleaning to beginning accuracy and shooting in different positions, etc. Ruger has done a lot to fill up my gun cabinet, probably more than any one single maker, in fact.

We got it home and ... it didn\'t shoot. Something wrong in the trigger assembly.

Took it back to the shop and they wouldn\'t take it back ... said it was between him and Ruger now.

Horribly disappointing. My gun evangelism was starting to see an NRA membership as a good Christmas gift, and maybe even a Basic Pistol course.

Anyone ever have a lemon right out of the box? I\'ve never heard of such a thing.

What seemed to be the issue?
Did the firing pin leave an indent on the case?

Firing pin never moved. The ejector was assembled \"backwards\", though that didn\'t have much to do with the problem and was easily remedied. Basically, we could never \"cock\" the pin. I\'m assuming that if there was something put together incorrectly about the ejector, there might well be something else assembled incorrectly.

A \"Friday\" gun at the factory. Should\'ve asked for a \"Monday\" gun.

I would be willing to bet a call to Ruger customer service will result in a repaired or replaced gun. Let us know the results.

I just bought my son one 3 weeks ago. We haven\'t shot it yet waiting for the scope mount to arrive. I better check it out and make sure it works first.

The first guy I spoke with at Sturm, Ruger & Co. just said he\'d send out a new trigger assembly, which, I think, would\'ve corrected it, but when I spoke to the next guy, he said he would prefer that they have the whole rifle for their quality improvement process, and for safety.

So, it\'s going to start back to New Hampshire tomorrow.

Too bad ... the guy was so excited.

Anyway, Wife and I are going to buy him an NRA Basic Pistol class for Christmas.

Maybe a new gun shop! Sounds like horrible costumer service to me from the gun shop. They wouldn\'t be getting anymore of my money.

x2! At some point, any gun manufacturer is going to produce a lemon. It happens. But I sure would think the gun shop would do a heck of a lot more to help you out!

Well, just back from the shop. Discussed it with one of the owners and he was embarrassed. Turns out it was a new employee who had never dealt with this sort of thing. As noted by the boss, he should\'ve called someone who knew what to do.

Anyway, the gun is being picked up by UPS tomorrow and so I will count this as \"strike one\" against the shop. As a business owner, I know how tough these things can be. I also know it\'s best to speak to the owner. If the owner doesn\'t hear about it he can\'t fix it.

But I am disappointed with Ruger. Strike one there, too.

Wow, bummer.

One thing about a business is good customer service is the best endorsement that one can receive. This would be next to a good recommendation or word of mouth from their customers.

Hopefully everything gets resolved and they don\'t move to strike 2.........

Good to hear John! Hopefully strike one is as far as it goes for you with either company.

i feel your pain john. i bought my son a shotgun last year. malfunctioned the first trip out. bass pro made it right even though they have the same policy that once you buy it its between you and the company. sorry to hear all that though, especially since its a new gun guy.

I love my son\'s 10/22 but I HATE the batch of BX-25 magazines I bought for it. They jam on about every third round. I figured since these were Ruger OEM magazines they would be significantly better than the Hotlips magazines...WRONG!

One of these days I will sit and polish the loading ramps to match the factory 10 round mags. :x
