A Look Ahead At 2017

I\'m sure many of you are like me in that the planning for 2017\'s hunt(s) started on the ride home from camp in 2016. So let\'s hear your plans! You don\'t have to be specific on where you are actually going, but what things worked for you this year that you plan on doing next year and what are you planning on switching up?

For me, the biggest thing I am considering is switching where I archery hunt. I can basically have one full week to go elk hunt and I have historically used that week for our rifle hunt. It\'s difficult for me to change that up because my rifle hunts have been successful over the last few seasons, but I really think the area I rifle hunt could be spectacular during archery season. I found a ton of fresh rubs and scat this year that showed multiple bulls had been in the area weeks earlier. They weren\'t as prevalent during rifle season, but I was still luckily able to put one down. The difficult thing with that is it means I only get the one week to archery hunt and then maybe back-to-back weekends to \'weekend warrior\' it for rifle season. But, the rifle hunt would probably have to be closer to home, meaning I would be leaving the hunt that I have found success with the last couple years.

This dang bow is really causing issues!

im not sure yet. my son should have enuf points to get a ml tag in the unit i use to hunt so if he wants to go i will prob focus on that. if he doesnt then its possibly moose. i at least have a shot at a cow tag. but my first choice would be to focus on getting my cousin on a elk after the year he has had this year. hes never killed one. it will all take focus before the draw deadlines.

I have enough points Togo back into the unit I picked up a leftover tag in this year so that\'s easy. I also saw 5 good bucks in there during archery season so I think I\'m going to try to get back in there for 2nd season rifle deer but I don\'t know if they will still be there????? The big decision is my b list elk tag. Not sure what to do with that tag. I can pick up a leftover 2nd season for the same area as the deer/archery elk but then my season is over mid October! I like having the 4th season cow tag because it gives me something to look forward to and I killed a cow last year and saw cows this year. No clue what to do though!

2017 is going to be quite a dilemma for me. I have a bad shoulder that kept me from hunting this year. So, I finally went to an ortho and after looking at the X-ray he said, \"if you want to continue bowhunting, I\'ll fill out a handicap cross bow application for you\".

I\'m not sure I want to go that route. But if I want to continue hunting the archery season, that is my only choice at this point.

Just a couple \'new\' hunts on the radar for me

1- Wyoming pronghorn hunt - from a canoe....

2- Early Season Rifle Deer - starts the day after archery season closes

I\'m going to burn some PP this year and get not do OTC.

Bill, get out there and enjoy the hunt don\'t worry about a crossbow. My father went through this dilemma when he had to switch and still does so today. He started bowhunting over 60 years ago and still enjoys getting in the woods.

Brad, a Canoe and pronghorn? Never heard those two words together!

Brad gave me a tip on a boat elk hunt a couple years back that was successful. I am sure if anyone can Brad will make a canoe pronghorn hunt a success.

Burned all of our CO preference points this year anticipating a move to Oklahoma late spring/early summer next year. So, my primary focus will be bowhunting whitetails and hogs. OK archery season is 3 1/2 months long and I can harvest 6 deer total including rifle seasons.

Keeping my elk lease in Alamosa, CO and plan to hunt the last week of archery season with a friend or two from Oklahoma who haven\'t taken an elk. Hopefully can keep my residency status long enough to get the tag next year - $49 vs $619 difference would cover all my trip expenses. Good part of this tag is it\'s a rifle tag and good during the rut so can bowhunt some then get rifle if later in week and want better chance of filling tag.

Will likely use my pref points in CO for a long sought after archery elk tag. My brother was holding out his pre points for a muzzleloader hunt in the same unit, but he is leaning toward going with a bow. So, we both may be in a trophy draw unit next year.

Nice! Another trophy hunt for you Roman, that\'s awesome! How did your moose hunt go btw?

kills me to admit it, but I\'m not hunting elk in 2017. I\'m burning ALL my PTO time on an alaska trip with the family. should be an awesome trip, with a BUNCH of fishing going on. I hope to spend so much time wrangling trout, dolly varden, halibut and salmon that I return to Texas with gills. :)

2018 trip will be rifle hunt in the same area we hunted this year, but taking my boy, who will be 14 that fall. my dad, me, and the boy will make 3 generations in camp, and definitely an awesome trip.

Just remember your old pig hunting buddies when you move to Oklahoma. Oh, we might be interested in deer and turkey as well. :wtf:

it starts in several weeks.

headed to AZ for my first 2017 hunt. Couse Deer.

nursing my shoulders back to painfree. digging bamboo is leaving me a wreck. the wheels are coming off the wagon gents. i\'m taking it easy on bow practice, and sucking on an Aleve. i should be good to go.

2017 we are planning a big Sandhill Crane hunt in NM. we have a line on a farm that had MILLIONS a few weeks ago. MILLIONS!! i am not exaggerating. the sky was black with them.
