Everyone's dream maybe not, but to shoot a new world record bull elk would be quit an accomplishment. I'm just wondering is it possible? Are there still bulls around that big back in the deepest darkest places in the west. If so what state or area would you think. This area would obviously be an area that take years to get a tag for so don't e bashful I really am curious if this can be done. Thanks

I have seen all sorts of bulls on the web that currently are reaching 450+, so I believe they are still out there.

Buy the Arizona or Utah gov tag and add another 15k on top of that for a guide and a finders fee, and yeah you can get a world record, usually it's a bull someone's been watching for awhile and if they know you're serious they will tell you when to buy the tag, because of rain fall and horn growth.

I will stick with my OTC tag in Idaho, I would love a world record but not for 15K.

Marc,

May I ask what do you believe would motivate a person to make that goal?  What if you did break the record?  Would you still be satisfied if in the next few years someone else broke the record that you just set?

Even if a hunter were to make the goal of each year shooting a bigger bull than the last they may never approach the world record.

If however someone did make the goal of shooting a world record then their first order of business should be to become very weathy and accumulate maximum points for every state.  I would think Arizona would be near the top of the list.  Then plan on not killing very many elk for the rest of your life.

Probably not realistic to think you could go out an get the world record bull but it is not unreasonable to dream of shooting a 400" bull in some states.  A co-worker has a nephew-in-law that shot a 421" bull this year with his bow, it is an absolute beast!  It was in an area that takes 6-7 points to draw.  DIY public land too.  I'm hoping in 12 or so more years when I draw Utah again that maybe his bull will have some offspring as big as he was that I can chase  :D

Utah and Arizona are probably your best bet.

Funny how it is that once you shoot something big you keep thinking and dreaming of ways that you can shoot something bigger.  I shot a 370" bull this year with my bow and now I'm thinking and dreaming of ways that I can get me a 400" bull.  Too bad I can't afford a San Carlos tag or even a guide or land owner tag, don't know that I'd want to even if I could, something about DIY public land hunts makes it really gratifying.

I have seen at least a half dozen bulls in 4 yrs in  my area of NM that would go over 400, a couple way over. And one wound up being taken in AZ last year 10 miles from where I was hunting,AZ new archery record 428, I think.

Would I like to get one sometime? Yeah. But I'm realistic and a last big bull,5x5 or 6x6, about 350 is what I have been after, and have come damn close many times.
Maybe next year,as this years trophy will be filling my cow tag I saved.

Alot of these bulls are on public land and can be drawn with no points or for way less than the prices mentioned, buy a LO tag and even get a guided hunt. Fair Chase.

AZ had 12-15 bulls shot over 400" this year. When I was a resident I couldn't draw a tag. Now as a non resident I still can't draw a tag. 11 bonus points.. Now with everyone and their brother putting in for AZ.. I'll be lucky to draw within another 5 yrs.
records are meant to be broken. If you shoot a bull like that, start the challenge over with a spike and work your way back up!!
