im thinking about applying for my 12 year old son a cow ony ml tag this September. im already in the mnts an think he would have a better chance than first rifle season. up side is he might hear some bugling an get to talk to an elk even if he couldn\'t shoot a bull, downside is its iron sights an one shot. so which has the better odds of him seeing a cow in yalls opinion. I admit after two years of elk hunting I have only seen 3 cows an two of those were right after I shot my bull. ive seen lots of bulls but few cows.

I think your son would have a blast during ML season [literally]
And the cows will be with the bulls more. Its never a bad time to be in the elk woods.
You could still archery hunt the same time - scout new areas too

that\'s what im thinking, he can hopefully hear one bugle, an if one bugles maybe theres a harem of cows around, an its better weather, so could be win win

I think the early season hunts both archery and ML are a better experience for a young hunter.
The weather is much nicer, aspens are turning, and elk should be bugling on the mountain somewhere.
Enjoy your time with your young hunter no matter what you decide.

Early would be my pick as well. Get him in on some rut activity & he will be hooked for life! ELK rut, that\'s what I meant! ;)

Iron sights, and one shot is the only way to hunt. It\'s not a negative, but a positive. It will teach him to be a real hunter, and not just a shooter.

StillHunter ... you are old school ... and I like it.

And I\'d agree with those saying go earlier ... better weather is real important with youngsters ...

Bad weather hunting is \"advanced-intermediate\"-level, I think.
