Sorry for the lengthy post, I am looking to for gear for my first elk hunt with my longbow the first week of September!
I will be hunting unit 70 and trying to get my gear together but just can?t afford some stuff. So I would like to see if someone can make or help me make a list of must have items that are cheaper and efficient. Coming from the east coast and thick woods I just can?t see spending the money on some of the clothing lines that I would just get ripped to pieces here.
I will be setting my wall tent as a base and having the option to go in 3 nights at a time would be great with a 1 man tent and dehydrated foods.
I have a Easton full bore 5600 pack and optics. But as far as other gear everything is open to change. So if anyone has any info that would help a guy out, please do lol! Thanks!

Hey Blazin. First I'll say is you don't need any fancy high buck camo to hunt elk. Your camo you wear at home will work just fine.  I  watched two guys last year on a ridge across from me wearing sitka that absolutely stuck out like a sore thumb everywhere they walked.

I don't know your pack but if it has a internal frame so you can put a 100 lbs of meat in it you will be ok. Mine doesn't so I use a frame pack for hauling meat.

Give us a little better idea of what other gear you are looking for for and we'll help out any way we can.

Exactly as FM said. Tell us what you have and we'll tell you if it will work. I'm betting it will. As for clothing, I often hunt in jeans and a long sleve camo T-shirt. Your 5600 cu in pack may be a little big unless it is compressable. But don't break the bank on anything expensive.

I would look at the gear list Cory has on EHU and start there.  Remember to kill an elk you need a bow and one arrow and good boots.  From that I would look at what you have and then look on ebay, classifieds on hunting sites, etc... for the stuff you feel is necessary vs. what would be nice to have.  I don't have much gear that I bought new.  I add to it yearly as I find deals on stuff.

I'm a tightwad and most of the gear I have is very affordable. Here are just a few of the ways I cut corners.

1) no expensive hiking poles. Cut some sticks if you need them.

2) No fancy name brand, super fabric clothing. Cotton hasn't killed me yet! The trick is to keep dry in the first place. So good rain gear is a must. But here again it doesn't have to be some super duper expensive stuff. Just something that will keep you dry but is breathable and won't cause you to sweat.

3) Extra boots and socks. Wet ones are the pits!

4) No $100+ jet boil for spike camp when a $14 Trangia will work just as well. Just takes a few minutes longer.

5)Spent your money on a GOOD GPS, a GOOD Compass, and know how to use both. Also if hunting alone, and emergency device like a Spot, or I prefer the ACR resQlink.

6) A silnylon tarp will work for a spike camp. Many weigh less than a pound.

You said you had a wall tent. So an army cot, a good sleeping pad and a good bag will be great for sleep. A Coleman cook stove and lantern will be fine also. That's about all you need for the first week in September. It really doesn't get all that cold usually. But rain can make it chilly.
