AK Moose - What would be your preference?

Talking with the pilot the other night, I asked how far the area he flies into is.
He said that the best moose hunting isnt a long flight, but some guys want a longer flight to \'feel\' they are getting a better Alaska experience.

I told him I am after a moose with a bow [preferably] and he took this into account for the area he will choose.
I was told this about the pilot...
\'Whatever Harley thinks is best, is what you should go with. I wouldn\'t second-guess him, if I were you. Like all of us who\'ve been in there the past fifty or sixty years, he knows the \'area\' really well.

So,
What would your preference be?
A long flight in where the moose may or not be?
Or a shorter flight where a greater chance of shooting a moose is?

If it was me it would have to be a shorter flight with a greater chance of shooting a moose... :upthumb: :upthumb:

But I hate flying anywhere too and I would much rather have a better chance to shoot a moose if I didn\'t have to fly at all...

I would go for the shorter flight and go shoot a moose. You can always hire him to fly you around if you just want to fly and see the country. After you get your moose of course. Maybe fly into a remote lake for some afternoon fishing. :upthumb:

Here is a pic of the lake we will leave from

Well ahhhh! I\'ve always been told there is no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid answers.

So I\'ll answer your -------question with a ------ question of my own. Are you going on a hunting trip or a sight seeing trip? I\'ll bet you can answer it yourself.

Worded as only WW could do. That\'s just poetry there Bill!! :)

I say when he comes to pick you and your moose up ask him to take the long way back!

But what if everyone chooses the short flight and that means lots of untouched monsters are out in the longer flight area......

.....monster......low pressured....bulls.... :tease:

Kinda like elk hunting. Everyone wants to get way back in away from everyone and walk past plenty of elk on the way. ;)

Truth!
Both of my elk were taken less than a quarter from a mile from a road.... COMBINED :haha: :haha: :haha:

edit: I am sure I just jynx\'d myself.... guess who is going to be dragging a 380\" out of the woods ten miles from the nearest road this year.... :upthumb: ;)

Sounds like some good advice from folks that know the man and the area to someone that doesn\'t know the area and has no way of scouting it before hand...

Why don\'t ya\'ll take Dan with you and let him fly into to far area and test his theory??? That would kill 2 birds with one stone...

BTW

I also had the opportunity to do a DIY float hunt - 55 miles thru my area.
It would take 6-7 days to do that.
Raft rental = $105/day [my own camp gear]

Would that interest type of hunt anyone? Opposed to a fly-in?

NO way... I\'d be all over the fly in, no matter what the cost.
We used to take puddle jumpers and helicopters through the beautiful parts of Maine and it was breathtaking.
I can\'t imagine how beautiful it is to be over Alaska.

I\'d pay for that view and experience 100x and then some. :upthumb:

i would listen to the locals. besides, a short flight is still in the bush up there.
and yes, the float hunt would be a blast to

I\'m just the opposite from Dan because I hate flying... I can see all the natural beauty standing on the ground or in a boat floating around in the water...

I want ever get caught dead on a ocean cruise either but rivers and lakes and flooded timber and flooded ditches are different... :D :D
