Anybody use Amtrak for a hunting trip? Thinking of this as an option for going on a solo elk trip.

In what capacity were you thinking of using the train? I\'ve heard of guys using the the Durango/Silverton train to access the back country for elk and goat hunts.

If I can ship my gear and hop a train from WI it might be cheaper and easier than driving by myself 24 hrs. then rent a car when i get to MT

rifle hunt?

i dont think Amtrak will not let weapons on board. my brother is a cop and they wouldnt let him have his mandatory carry piece..even locked up with the train security. i\'m 99% positive this was Amtrak.

bow? i would definitely check. sucks if they ban anything \"weapon\".

I don\'t know why you could not ship your gun. When I flew to Canada, I had my gun checked in and shipped. There was no issue. Amtrak sounds like an interesting option, but I suspect it will be slower than driving.

I took the Amtrak from lacrosse, WI to Whitefish, MT a couple years ago. No baggage check if you have a room, which I did. You can carry your weapon right on the train and put it in your room with you. Awesome way to travel if you have the time. I had 5 weeks to kill so I took the train, absolutely loved it. If you drink you can carry on a bottle with you also, again must have private room. Rooms I think are three different sizes. They have cheese and wine tasting, dining car, observation bubble car, and a lounge. I stayed in my room for the most part watching movies on my computer, but got around to the observation car when we hit the mountains. I believe the train from WI to MT is called the empire builder.
