I do regular raking too, but not rattling. However I know of a couple guys who carry around a set of five point antlers for rattling, and have pretty good success.
If I was still guiding I might think about it, but for a hunter it\'s one more thing to lug around in the woods. It\'s sort of like cold-calling, too, since you never know where a bull will come from.
I agree with Jaquomo. I\'m not about to pack a set of elk antlers around. I suppose if you really want to try it you could get yourself one of those Wayne Carlton or HS rattling bags. Or better yet, just make your own. About all they amount to is a cloth bag with a few dowel rods in it.
I have done my share of tree raking though. I use a club about the size of a wiffelball bat. And when I start off, I haul off and smack the side of a small tree as hard as I can. I actually try to break the club over the tree. I want to make a lot of noise. I only hit it once or twice. Then I start raking the heck out of it and even break limbs off.
I\'ve tried the big rattling bags and they don\'t have the same resonance. Have never had elk do anything but look up curiously when rattling with a bag to bulls in view.
I don\'t even have much luck with them when rattling for muleys or whitetails, compared to using real antlers.
would this be to try and represent early season sparring? because the elk I heard fighting last year sounded like a car wreck. on top of the clanking of horns. the ground seemed to shake as they were digging into the for traction. I would think that it would be hard to replicate the sound of a couple of 900 pound monsters going at it at full tilt.
I know a local kid who rattled in and shot a nice 6 point bull elk , while rattling for whitetails. Here in Montana. I think it was around the 1st of november??
my brother-in law rattles all the time in sw co. he cut down a set of 5x5 brown sheds. he has had great success with them since using them. he has tried the big rattle bags and something called a rattle cage and hasnt had any luck with those. he sticks to the sheds.
I read an article in outdoor life I think when I was a kid. it talked about trying to use whitetail antlers for rattling elk. from what I remember the article stated that deer antlers where more dense in comparison to the elk antlers. they even had a the two laying side by side. you could see how porous the deer antler was compared to the elk antlers. ill try and find the article and post it up here
