Are elk predictable?

I compare elk to a good coon dog. Even the best of them will make a liar out of you at some point in time.

Just when you think you have elk all figured out, they will teach you something new.

I can only come up with smart-a$$ comments here ...

What did you have in mind, cnelk?

Let\'s put it this way...

Either you get a response from a bugle or you are cold calling, and the elk is coming in.
Are elk \'predictable\' enough to determine what they will do?
Or which way they will approach?

Or is this a \'pattern\' like JF refers to?

The only animal that is predictable when I call is my dog, and she\'s an uncommonly good one!

Sure elk are predictable within limits. If they see you coming, they leave. If they smell you, they are gone. They eat, sleep, drink and breed in a fairly predictable order. If there is an easy way for them, as opposed to jumping and climbing over slash, they will take the easy route. What is so hard about that? :D

I\'m not sure if they are predictable as I have little experience with Elk behavior. I was wondering If you saw a group of elk feeding in a meadow in the morning would it be more than likely they would come back out that evening to feed in the same meadow?

Elk are creatures of instinct. They can be patterned but are not predictable.

Just my 2 cents!

I have to agree with John on this one...we have hunted certain areas where we could pattern the elk for the most part, but predicting exactly when they would move into those patterns was not very easy.
