Backpacking

I am hoping that I draw my elk tag for a limited unit. This particular hunt will require a pack in a few miles and living like a homeless person for a week or so. I\'ve never backpacked before so I am going to practice a few times before I find myself with the challenges of hunting on top of the challenges of backpacking. In preparations I have begun collecting the required gear. I\'ve had on old external frame pack I bought off craigslist. I can use this for backpacking as well as packing out an elk, hopefully. I recently bought a barely-used tent, new(barely-used) sleeping bag, some titanium stuff, built a ground cloth last night, etc, etc. I\'ll need some dehydrated meals, a long spoon and need to figure out a good spot to \"test\" my backpacking prowess. I\'m going to start in the back yard first...maybe the basement. We\'ll see.

I just ordered a hammock. For $16.00 it was hard NOT to order the hammock.

I\'m not interested in sleeping per se in the hammock but it sounds relaxing while in camp. It\'s 12 oz. I know, grams = ounces = pounds. I see one quick way to reduce weight and it\'s the SST \"S\" hooks on either end. I have aluminum carabiners that hold a hell of a lot more than myself. I\'ll replace the \"S\" hooks with those. I also have an old sun shade I had on my deck which is the ripstop nylon, water proof, and I may just convert that into a tarp to bring.

I\'m having a lot of fun sorting through all the gear. I also pride myself on finding deals on the classifieds. It\'s a bit therapeutic weighing all the stuff and deciding if saving a couple ounces here or there is worth losing out of functionality. I don\'\'t see myself getting into the ultralight stuff as I\'m prepared to justify the titanium cookware so I can bring a 750 of whiskey with me. I\'m not drilling holes in my toothbrush handle either.

I\'m planning my first overnight adventure for a couple weeks. I am excited. My wife has asked if she could come along as she\'s seen me really getting into something wholesome. I ordered her a hammock today and have an extra pack for her to use that I got for free off some local facebook classified site. I\'ll let her use my old sleeping bag and I\'ll have to carry a second sleeping pad for her since the others are pretty large.

Considering the nature of our relationship I hope the first outing goes well. We shall see. Wish me luck. :)

I didnt see any \'water\' items in your list.
Tablets?
Purifier?
It\'s not all inclusive. I have the Platypus Gravityworks filter and a Sawyer mini as backup. I considered tablets in conjunction...but I drank roof runoff recently through the Platypus and didn\'t have the trots all night so I guess it works.

Sleeping pad? You\'ll freeze your butt off without one, never mind it being super uncomfortable.
I dove super deep into the backpacking stuff the year before last and you\'re right, it\'s fun! I plan on doing my first backpack hunting trip this fall (if we draw) so i\'m excited for you! I can\'t remember how much I told you about my deer area last year but I plan on making a couple backing over night trips over the summer, you are more then welcome to tag along to test out your gear, catch some fish, etc. Oh and you could help me scout for deer.

Aside from the sleep pad I can\'t think of anything you don\'t already have covered, besides water like Brad mentioned. Treking poles were one of the things I bought last summer that I didn\'t think I would really use, well they are awesome. I got them at Costco for like 30 bucks I think.
Whiskey is super important. In fact one of the coolest things (albeit a luxury item for sure) that I bring along is this <!-- m --><a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https://www.patsbcb.com/\" onclick=\"window.open(this.href);return false;\">https://www.patsbcb.com/</a><!-- m -->
Something about making a beer out of water from an alpine lake at the end of the day is very satisfying,

Hmm...how else can I spend Lark\'s money...

I have a backpacking Thermrest and I just bought trekking poles last week for $5 from a guy at work. They aren\'t the best but only 20oz combined.

I just weighed mine. 24.4 oz not the lightest but I don\'t carry them all the time so I am not too worried about the weight.

Google Korean spoon. Practically free at all Korean grocery stores. If you can\'t find one let me know, I\'ll send you one. It isn\'t as light as my titanium spoon, but $1 vs $20 is epic. It moves more food when shoveling
