I\'m looking to buy a basic, starter fly kit (Cabelas has them on sale this weekend).

It will be used during my summer scouting trips to hopefully drag a few brookies out of the streams, and maybe the high mountain lakes.

Should I go with a size 5 or 6 line size?

Cabelas starter kit

Also, if one had to pick a half dozen flies for the summer months, what would they be (again target is high country brookies in July / August).

Thanks,
AB

Unless you want to brush up on your profanity, I would go shorter and a lighter wt rod, like a 6\'6\" 3wt
As you know brookies live in willow choked beaver dams or small streams.
You will not like a longer rod, unless you also plan on using it for larger, more open streams
But for the price, you would get a lot of enjoyment from that unit.
Go light!

I would recommend a size 12 Renegade or Parachute dry fly patterns

Those brookies arent picky - they are just hungry

We\'ll I picked up the 8\' 6\" 5 weight today. Only $30.

From what I can tell most the creeks / ponds up in my area are fairly open. Hopefully I won\'t loose to many flies in the grass.

Not sure if want to carry waders up there. Cabelas does have some hip waders on sale. Is it worth the effort to drag them up there?

When I go brookie fishing, I just bring an old pair of tennis shoes and an old pair of jeans to change into

Sounds a heck of a lot lighter than waders... :D

I will go through my fly boxes and get you a good setup. Hell, if I can get my tying bench set up this week I\'ll tie you some of my most favorite flies. Maybe it\'ll help sweeten the pot for that sleeping bag. ;)

Saw a video with a guy wearing a wading kilt, danged funny looking fly rod too.

That coupled with a some wading sandals and he was good to go.

Anyway, I also bought some BWO flies. Hopefully I can get out this weekend to try out the new rig.

LB, that bag is just sitting there. Are you free for an hour this weekend?
