daaaaannng!

Day one of sandhill crane hunting is behind us. This morning was insane. Craneaggedon!  The first group landed so far away; I was dejected.  I thought, Crap, just perfect. I had earplugs in so I could not hear the birds. I look behind us and the sky was black. Err. Okay. I calmed down, double triple checked the safety.

Then phoosh!  They all set the landing pattern and veered to us. Steady steady steeeeaaady......I could bearly hear, but I finally heard the words, ?take them!?  Pow pow pow. Half of the limit was done. The birds are so giant they peel off so slow. Aim pow
They fall hard. I heard it described as a lawn chair falling out of the sky.  We were done in fifteen minutes. Just counted the birds fall until we got our limit.

We could have made it back to our hotel for the free continental breakfast. I shot 7 shells

Great job Cliff!!!!!

Enjoy that "ribeye of the sky"!
:thewave:

That's awesome Cliff! I've also heard the 'ribeye of the sky' thing. You'll have to let us know if it's true. That's definitely a hunt I want to try at some point.

Nice job Cliff. Those birds are a little bigger than the quail and grouse you normally go after.

hahaha... where were you hunting?

We've shot cranes in Sasketchewan, it feels like youre pulling up on a prehistoric pterodactyl. Unlike most other waterfowl, when the shot is called they don't flare out in front... they just kept coming.

they don't call it "ribeye of the sky" for no reason either, sandhill is pretty good table fare.

We were in Lubbock Tx. There were millions of birds.

We ate some. It is the best non seafood meat I've eaten. We grilled some rare and ate it with horseradish. I can't wait for my wife to try.

Wow, it even looks like steak. You definitely have my curiousity piqued by saying it?s the best meat you?ve ever had other than seafood.

Sounds like a fun day of hunting ! I've heard they are really good eating.

I would love to hunt these birds. Is it common for them to come in and land close to you?  Just thinking about a Bullhead to that long neck. Ha ha.
