Bow Speed?

What is everyone's take on current bow speeds?  I'm not big on the fast bows but it seams that's the big push anymore.  I just recently had a friend buy a bowtech insanity but has yet to shoot it.  All he talks about is the speed.  My setup shoots just over 260, which for me seems plenty fast.  I'm not of the mindset its not overrated but for me its all about quiet, accurate, and a good penetrating arrow.

Nothing wrong with having a bow that's fast. Like you said it's the arrow you are pushing out of it. Speed isn't everything

Most bows never shoot IBO. Most are about 15-20 fps slower than IBO rating. Speed isnt everything for sure. Yeah your arrow may get there in a hurry but if you make a bad shot, your just making it faster. lol I prefer to have a good mixture of speed and quiet. Leaning more towards quietness. But its all about making a good shot and trying to anticipate the games reaction to the shot. But so many of the new bows are great for both. I still shoot an old Mathews MQ32. Its around 260fps. But silent. I hope to upgrade this year. Kids are getting older and we are starting to stabilize our budget. So its on the list! lol

I think it is interesting how much stock people put in bow speed. It is nice to have something at or over 300 fps but not necessary. As mentioned already slower speeds get the job done as well.

I purchase a speed bow this year, a PSE DS EVO. Its a real fast bow so just changed my arrows to Easton FMJ's cause they are heavy. My arrows are now 475 grns. Speed is fine as long as you have an arrow to carry the bows energy down feild ;)

With my hunting set-up I am 260ish from bows that are IBO 330. But I have a short draw - only 27"

I like speed but don't want it to come at the price of an uncomfortable to shoot or noisy bow.

I was amazed at how quiet my bow is. I can say I haven't seen anything at the range that is any quieter. They have made some amazing advances in some of these new speed bows.

Oops I guess I was imagining things I get 260 from my iceman but it is a 310-318 ibo.

I get about 274 pulling back 65 punds with a 27'' draw out of a 2009 pse exforce treestand hf. Its fast enough for me.

297fps with a 400 grain arrow out of a Mathews Z7 Magnum with a 28.5" draw @ 71lbs for a KE of  78.37 ft.lbs

284 fps with my PSE stinger. It gets the job done. My buddy just bought a bow that is shooting at 330 fps. We shoot the same groupings so speed isnt everything.

I would say take every thing you can get but dont give up arrow weight to get speed,if your only shooting out 40 or 50 yards then it all works but for those of us reaching out 90 or 100 yards you need every thing you can get to make it always a good shot with good penetration. just my opinion!!!

As ghost mentioned, I would worry about KE more than the speed, but it takes speed and arrow weight to up your KE.  It's finding the sweet spot so you still have a flat shooting arrow and plenty KE to kill and animal the size of and elk.

I am lucky enough to have a wife that let me purchase a new bow after my last deployment. I picked up a Bowtech Insanity with 80 lbs limbs. It is pulling 84.5 and with my 29.5 in draw shooting the GT Velocity 300’s, my bow was crono’d at 343 FPS. This is generating about 100 ft/lbs of kinetic energy. I will try and post a video so that there is no doubt but it is very nice having a bow that is this fast coming from a switchback that was shooting 275 fps. There is nothing wrong with that old bow but I have a new love now for my insanity.

I know this is old post. I shoot a Hoyt Rampage XT at 27" draw at 60lbs with a 404 grain arrow at 275 FPS. I havent had a problem getting animals.

This past year I shot the matthews heliem. I was throwing a 435 grn arrow 280fps. I shot a buck in dec at 94 yds in his bed. The arrow blew through till it hit dirt, my buck hid dirt 75 yds later. The Indians did it with a stick and a rock.. Shot placement!!! Good luck this fall!!

348 FPS out of my insanity,  Im all about shot placement,  I bought the insanity in the hopes of breaking IBO, had to go to 80# limbs to do so at 29" DL, but I did and now shoot at 74 pounds,  "because I can", like others said, a fast bad shot is just a fast miss.
