Bowfishing

I\'m going to lazy and put a link to my blog for this one... We\'ve made it out bowfishing a couple times this year. They were just starting to spawn, so while we had some decent shooting it wasn\'t crazy like it would be when they\'re full on going nuts.

And you guys might think I\'m crazy but we\'ve been filleting our carp for the table. On our last trip I brought out a fryer and we had carp sandwiches for lunch, the rest I brought home and smoked (cnelk might not have given me his brine recipe if he knew what I was using it for!!! :angle: )

I grew up eating smoked and pickled carp and still hate leaving them behind, although I still do plenty of that...

And, maybe the best part was my wife shot her first fish. Didn\'t thinking she ever be interested but she started helping the boys spot fish and before you know it she asked if she would be able to pull my bow back, after realizing she could, she wouldn\'t give it back... I got her rigged up with her own setup as soon as we got home!!

Looks like a blast Matt. :upthumb: And no there is nothing wrong with eating ruff fish. I ate a lot of ground sucker patties when I a young lad growing up on the farm. Great smoked all so!

A lot of guys think the only time to bowfish is in the spring when they are spawning. But actually you can do it all summer long. Just find a good carp lake and walk along the bank. What you are looking for is a muddy spot in the water within bow range. These muddy spots are caused by carp fanning the bottom with their tail to stir up food. For some unknown reason, the fish will come to the surface every once in awhile to have a look around. I have no idea why they do it, but if you are patient, when he comes up, that is the time to take your shot. Works like a champ and you can hunt them all summer.

As for eating carp, you will find that they are very boney. But if you fillet and score and deep fry them , they are very good eating. I remember when I was a kid, every small town around had fish fry on the holidays. Fish sandwiches were some of the best tasting there was. They were always carp. If you didn\'t want the sandwich, you could get a deep fried fillet with coleslaw and baked beans. YUM! :upthumb:

I\'ve been getting out quite a bit myself bowfishing here in northern Colorado. Saw some YouTube videos and figured it could be fun. Picked up a used Hoyt bow off craigslist, put a reel on it, instant fun!
