Build or buy? (Garage storage)

I\'ve been doing some thinking and I want to do some storage in my garage for my hunting gear.
I want it for not only organization purposes, but to have some scent control too.

I have a dirtbike, generator, dogs, and other things that could get scent into my gear right now.
So a nice storage closet will help me do this.

I\'m just torn if I should buy or build.

If I buy I don\'t want to go cheap, I\'ve been looking at stuff on Lowes website like this:

Or if I build one, I am thinking a two door closet with 2 or 4 drawers on the bottom.


Does anyone have something like this? Pictures would be awesome or recommendations.

Dan, I have also looked at the Gladiator tall cabinets with casters. I prefer cabinets in my garage that I can move easily if needed.

From a kitchen remodel 25 years ago, I took my old kitchen cabinets, attached heavy duty casters, MDF tops routed with a 1/4 inch round edge on 3 sides and 2-3 coats of boat quality varnish. When I moved, I gave away my tall pantry style rolling cabinet. My days of building stuff is almost over, hence, the eying of the Gladiator tall cabinet to replace the modified pantry cabinet.

I will likely purchase the Gladiator 66-in H x 36-in W x 18-in D Metal Multipurpose Cabinet with casters at a later date.

One reviewer mentioned they purchased the Gladiator cabinets on sale during a Labor day sale. In January, I saw some of the Gladiator cabinets on sale for 20% off.

As for hunting gear in a garage, I would never store my hunting items in a garage. The fine dust and grit would be bad for it. If you had those heavy duty totes that can seal well, then perhaps it would work. I recently took items out of a storage unit which I used for 1 year. The amount of dirt and grit was significant. A home garage isn\'t much better. Plus, my garage frequently has strong odors.

I really like the caster ideas too. I want to be able to move them easy if need be.
The labor day idea is a great idea, thanks for reminding me that it was coming up. :upthumb:

As for the garage part, I hate it, but it\'s what I am stuck with.

You hit the nail on the head with the fine dust. I live in NM and during any wind storm, it gets nasty.....
I could seal the entire garage off and it will still be super dusty the next day :downthumb:

So for now I have to use the garage and that\'s another reason I think I like the Gladiators.
It can be moved inside very easily.
Sometimes I see people build stuff and it always turns out larger and heavier than already made stuff. So that could be more difficult to move....

Dan, I went with the Kobalt cabinets in the garage when I finished ours. These may work if you have the overhead room then go with well sealing storage bins and maybe put into large trash bags during off season.

I\'m fortunate for now to have a spare bedroom in our basement that keeps all of my hunting gear inside plus nobody goes down there much so limited odor.

Store them all in your Range Rover!

Shelving units, rubbermaid bins with lids that snap on. Mark the outside of the bins with whats in them. When you go on a trip you grab what bins you need and off you go.

I say build. When we remodeled the basement, I made sure I had my own little room for all my hunting and reloading stuff. Only problem was I got one room for my stuff and the wife got two rooms for hers. Go figure!

My biggest issue is the fact this house isn\'t my \"forever home\". If I was then I would be hands down remodeling it or building me an ultimate set up.
The downfall for me is I could move anywhere from a year to three. When I do find my resting place, I will certainly be doing what you did and I will also lose that same battle :lol:

This is definitely an option too. You can never have enough hunting totes. :upthumb:

This is what we did. I love it. I grab the bins I need for camping/hunting and go.

And the beauty of it is... it made the move with me in November this year. One day I\'d like to weatherseal the tubs but I\'ve yet to find weatherseal thin enough. I can vouch for their waterproofness though.... :lol: We were caught in a torrential downpour while on our way up to a camping spot. I threw everyone\'s clothes bags in spare tubs and they were perfectly dry. :clap:
