Call me crazy, but after last seasons unsuccessful 1st elk hunt with a bow for my son (I\'ve never elk hunted and didn\'t get a tag but was chauffeur, money man, not so good guide and potential packer).
Recap: He drew a 2015 general elk tag in Wyoming, we went 9 days in the Snowys and Sierra\'s he saw 1 elk (I was 10 ft away and didn\'t see it) and while we had fun the hunt didn\'t go at all like we hoped. Thinking back one thing was obvious early on. A cow would have been just as welcome as a bull. So with that in mind I put Kenny in for a more limited tag in Wyoming with no points and not too surprisingly he didn\'t draw.
Colorado draw was next up, with advice from another hunter on another forum I looked into Colorado youth cow tags. In some units there are a percentage that get set aside out of the allotted tags. The ability to muzzelload hunt with one of these tags also had more appeal than a bow as the range is a bit better and I had just bought my son a new muzzy for his upcoming birthday this month
I ended up using the Colorado help line to check out possible units and draw odds for the youth tags and settled on a muzzy cow tag application for Kenny in unit 14 (which also includes unit 214) and also a muzzy doe tag application for the same init 14 / 214. Call me crazy but fingers are crossed that he can draw the cow elk tag and maybe even the doe deer tag.
My research has produced the list of trailheads and the two outfitters that offer pack outs for them and am now in wait and see mode regarding the draw.
I will post back after the draw the results (successful or not) and if successful any advice about 14 / 214 would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Kevin.
