Came Across an Outfitter Camp

Researching an area that I believe to have the makings to hold healthy elk populations and is located roughly 2 miles off of the closest motorized trail. After investigating the drainages within the 5 mile area I ended up identify two wall tents on Google Earth that I believe to be outfitter camps. They are within 2 miles of one another and in the heart of the area that I am looking at hunting.

Do these camps indicate that there will be heavy hunter pressure and shy elk? Does it mean that this is just a confirmation that there are healthy populations? Does this mean nothing and hunt the area like any other? Has anyone had a similar experience and if so, what was the result of that area when you put boots on the ground?

You can PM me if you'd like, What Unit were you looking at?

Last year I found an outfitters tent on google maps while searching google earth, but never saw the camp setup during my time in the filed. That area did have elk, not great numbers but I did run into a few, but I did also run into other hunters. I heard some of the worst Bugles I've ever heard.

I think it's a crapshoot, if you can find who the outfitter is you can email them to see if they plan on hunting that unit during the same season you are looking at.

Google earth will tell you when the picture was taken. It is likely to be a couple years old.

I believe you can contact the National Forest office for whatever district you are in and they should be able to give you an idea of which outfitter it is, where they are allowed to camp, and how many folks they can have in there.

There are plenty of resident hunters that have horses and pack in their camps [wall tents] before season opens and then go back in and hunt.

I wouldnt be so sure they are 'outfitter camps'

Hose setups on horseback are fairly common here in Montana as well.  I have found several old camp spots that have the cut poles for canvas tents and everything, meat pole, fire ring etc
