can diaphragms just suddenly "go bad"?

my favorite dome all of a sudden sounds like crap...  doesn't appear to have a torn reed, can't figure it out?

Snowcrest6,

How was your diaphragm stored prior to going bad? If they are left in heat or sunlight (in a vehicle), the latex can definitely go bad and no longer produce good sounds (or any sounds). This can be compounded by leaving saliva on the latex after you finish using it. It is best to rinse the diaphragms with water after use, then pat dry, then store in a breathable call case (pouch) or in a ziploc inthe fridge. I've gotten several years use out of diaphragms that are stored correctly, so it's not normal for them to suddenly stop working.

looks like i violated all the rules!  stored in my car, in a case, wet.

lesson learned.  thanks Corey.
