Myself and 3 friends have elk tags for Colorado GMU 54.... this will be all of our first elk hunt. We are planning on camping and already have canvas wall tent with stove rented. Any advice or direction would be EXTREMELY appreciated
We will be going 3rd season (Nov 1-9). Looking for possible places to go that wouldn't be completely covered with people but might have a chance for 1 of the 4 of us to put a tag to use. Also, what type of conditions we might can expect. Thanks for any help.
expect and be ready for deep snow . lots of spot and stalk glassing till your snow blind lol but it is done all the time watch Small openings in dense fir areas at 7000 or 8000 feet may be lower depending on the snow if the snow is light still you can hunt higher take your time good optics warm clothes great boots 2 pair for sure hopefully a stove for that tent
if you go to an area that allows them yes it would keep them to the trails or roads though lol we drove off trail one november and spent over half a day digging and wenching out of a unnoticeable snow drift the only bonus was the 5by5 we were wenching out too
Tire chains, wench, pulleys, straps, chainsaw. If you can drive to it, so can other hunters so you've got to be willing to wear down some boot leather & put some distance between you & them. Get on the CDOW interactive map & find winter concentration areas. Call the local wildlife officers & rangers for advice. Early mornings & late days. Good luck.
