I am a novice hunter in CO, been doing rifle the last couple years and this year I am doing Archery for the first time. I am looking at GMU 18 and GMU 28 and wondering if anyone has any experience in these areas. There is a lot of land here so just looking for any advice on where to get started with scouting and such. Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

Yeah I kind of figured on that, I am trying to be a bit closer to Denver so that I can do more weekend solo trips, so I figured that would be a sacrifice I will have to make . . .

I hunt 18, very heavily hunted but you can get away from people for the most part, there are a lot of pockets throughout the unit that are pretty difficult to access (steep and far) where you can get away from people. If you're within a mile or so from a road, in my experience you'll end up seeing more hunters than animals. Definitely elk in there though so don't let that discourage you just know you're going to have to put in work or get lucky!

I've hunted 28, but to offer advice :-\  I would have to say find another unit. It takes 3 hours to drive the perimeter, and only a handful of places hold elk in it. There are elk, but that is a tough unit to learn.

Send me a PM, if your heart is set there

I have never personally hunted 18 but know of folks who have. It is definitely crowded, but if you put in the work you can certainly punch your tag. One suggestion based on what I know these guys do is hunt downhill from the road. They hunt a big bowl area where you have to hunt downhill and pack uphill. Not many folks are willing to do that, but if you do you can be rewarded.
