61 is a really good unit. It is not a migration hunt. There are many elk and a good bull/cow ratio.
It is a great place to hunt for a 280-330 bull. There are some larger, but there are many in that range.
You will have to decide if it's worth the points to you, but it's really fun to hunt there. You will have lots of action.
Good luck
I know we have a couple members who have hunted there in the past and one that is hunting there this year. Hopefully one or two of them will chime in and give you their thoughts. In my opinion, 61 is one of the premier tags that you can still potentially draw with that many points. The couple units that would be considered better than 61 are either out of reach or still a long way off for you due to point creep.
I have 2 friends who hunted it and both shot 350 plus bulls and saw some bigger they said it?s crazy tons of elk in there . I?m not patient enough to save that many points lol
retired 112000::: All I can say is "If I had 15 points, I'd sure do it again"! Seeing as how you are retired, you should spend the entire season if at all possible. Get yourself a turkey tag as well.
I have hunted unit 62 for 7 years which borders 61. All I can say is watch ?2016 Colorado Rifle Elk Hunt with Randy Newberg? on Utube. Season 5 episode 6. It is a very good description of what to expect.
My best friend and I used our in-state points a few years ago on Unit 61. Great hunt. Bot got bulls. I recommend it. Here is a blog post on it, http://dustinhardage.com/colorado-elk-hunting-public-land/ Let me know if you want to chat.
