As some of you may know, I spend a good deal of my fall supporting CO youth hunter outreach programs.

These hunts are available for youths 12 -17, who are Colorado residents. The hunter and their sponsor (Parent normally) need to complete the hunters safety program before being allowed to hunt (Actually the program administrator checks to make sure you have the course done before notifying you).

As there are normally more hunters than seats, they randomly selected. Big game hunts may include Moose (they need to submit a report of some kind), Pronghorn, Elk, and Deer. Only female animals are harvested.

The hunts last about a 1.5 days on private land through out the state.

Depending on the hunt, you may stay in a bunkhouse, or a wall tent. CPW provides everything except the gun, and tag.

Visit the Youth Hunter Outreach page for more information.

It\'s a hoot, trust me.

Dana, that is awesome. I knew the DOW was big on youth hunts, but didn\'t realize there was those kind of opportunities out there. I think that is great. I can only hope that my 3 young boys will be into it enough to take advantage of that someday!

Awesome program that the CDOW and all volunteers should be applauded for!
Just curious if the elimination of the BGAP will have an impact on the properties that available for this program.
Any insight on this?

Shouldn\'t impact us all. I\'m not aware of any property the program uses that was part of BGAP.

One of the properties I hunt is part of the RFW program, and the other is a large lease which we can hunt.

my son got a doe pronghorn hunt in that program last year. we didn\'t end up going cause it was the week the polar vortex came thru an staying in a tent didn\'t sound like fun to either of us. but it was a well lead an run program. kudos to everyone involved in it.

I asked, but no. Jim (the guys that runs it) is an avid Archery hunter, but recognizes it is just to hard to sneak up on a critter when you are dragging two or three other people. Heck it\'s hard enough to get close enough with a rifle to let the kids shoot.

Sorry.
