Determining a unit to hunt

I am in the planning process of doing a DIY archery hunt.  I have been reading every forum I can and collecting all the statistics from the state sites.  I am interested in what others out there used for the final determination as to unit they chose to hunt after crunching the numbers.

this kicks my butt also, did you find any data for Montana on what areas produce what size bulls (six points , 5 points ect ) I know they keep track cause they survey me every year, but can not find the data anywhere.

I am planning a DIY Colorado hunt for next year. I narrowed it down to the region I want to hunt and then started taking a look at GMU's with lots of public land, percentage of success, number of hunters, etc...and from there picked a couple specific GMU's.  I have yet to call wildlife managers - but that is my next step. Hope that offers a little help.
