Hey guys. I'm new here. I am beginning to plan my 2016 archery elk hunt. We are really thinking about the west elk wilderness. The goal of our hunt is to put in the effort to lose the crowds and hopefully get on some bugling bulls. My brother is a real life cowboy and he is going to pack me in as far as it takes to help with my elk hunting addiction.

I have shot 3 public land elk with my bow. I am just wanting to do a pack in trip now while I can.

I would like to know of your thoughts about my trip, location, etc. Any help appreciated. Or email me. Thanks

All of my other elk were taken in the dykes creek area north of paonia. There is elk there but you are wore out before you get to them. I am really wanting to wake up and begin hunting. Thanks.

Hey I didn't realize this would be such a hot topic.  Really nobody can say anything about unit 53 or 54 Colorado?  I realize I'm not a big poster on here, somebody knows something.......

Good luck coming on here and getting info about a unit. Most knowledge is earned by sweat and sore muscles, guys aren't willing to give that out on the net. Find a RMEF banquet in your area and attend. Don't ask a lot of questions, listen, you'll learn more than you will on any website.

I've got to agree with jstephens. You can't expect guys who've done all the leg work to give up all their sweat equity to someone else. You even said it yourself that you want to get away from the crowds so I'm sure you must be able to understand why people are not responding to your request. They want away from the crowds too.
It appears you've proven yourself capable by shooting 3 elk. I'm on the east coast so the only scouting I can do is via google earth, topo maps, and state elk concentration maps. Look for dark timber on north facing slopes, water sources, terrain areas in drainages that level out - good spot for wallows. You've got to work with what you have. Don't take offense to no responses, but due to the nature of it you have to respect their privacy.
