Hey everyone. The family and I spent our summer vacation driving thru Wyoming and visiting Yellowstone NP. I would love to go back in the future and do a public land Elk hunt. I have read through the Wyoming game regs and they are very hard for this ole southern boy to get a grip on. At this point I\'m not set on archery or gun for the first trip just looking for a new adventure. I don\'t want to do this solo the first time. Any input on this would be appreciated.

Thanks

welcome saved, first off you have found the friendliest forum on the net.
read thru the archived tips for info on how to hunt elk, any question you can think of is prob on here somewhere. then, ask specific questions and you will get tons of info and help. i dont know anything about wy, except that some of it you have to have a guide or resident with you, so look into what areas you can hunt.
again, welcome and good luck.

Welcome to the site!!!! :thewave:

We have a few locals from WY and a few others who have hunted out there successfully.
My first question for you is when are you trying to do this hunt?
That will help us help answer questions for you!

welcome, sir. glad to know you are a brother. :)

I\'ve not hunted Wyoming, but have spent a little time around Yellowstone. Awesome country, but I\'m completely unfamiliar with hunting around those parts.

That said..... I\'ve been putting in for WY preference points so I\'ll watch this thread with interest! :)

again, welcome to the forum. Awesome bunch of folks, here.

I\'ve hunted whitetail on public land in my home state of Ga and the problem I run into here is lots of other hunters. I hunted Ohio a few years back on public land on opening day of muzzle loader season and I would have given anything for a solid orange pair of coveralls. Will I run into this problem in Elk country as well?

Love your handle. It tells me we are brothers in Christ.

I don\'t know much about Wyoming, but, In this part of Colorado you would be wise to wear at least the 500 square inches of required orange during the rifle seasons. I wouldn\'t even consider cutting fire wood without wearing orange. I may be wrong but I don\'t think Wyoming has a 500 square inch law. :ill: :mg:

I have always referred to my orange vest as my flak jacket.

Welcome to the site! :welcome:

I also have never hunted Wyoming, so unable to really help you there. But we do have lots of people on here who have. What questions do you have regarding their regs?

As far as running into hunters, that can always be a problem. The easiest way to escape them is to get off the road at least 1/2 mile to 1 mile. In my experience, once you do this you escape 80-90% of the other hunters in my experience. Just make sure you are in good enough shape to do that!

Again, welcome to the site. Fire away with any other questions you have. There are a bunch of helpful folks here! And as Scott mentioned, check out those Archived Tips. There is a lot of good info there!

I don\'t think you will be battling orange armys like you would in OTC areas because tags are drawn here.
You have the options of collecting up some points and saving for some better units or you can always check out the left over tag list!

Welcome!

First off, to hunt WY you need a Pref Point or two to get a General tag - mostly
There are some cow tags you can draw with 0 Pref Points so not knowing how, what you want to hunt, it can get confusing

Colorado is popular as it was OTC tags.
Buy one and go hunt

Lots of stuff to learn & do before you go on your first elk hunt tho!

Let us know your questions and how we can help

Yes pref points are a must in Wyoming and if I remember right the Pinedale area and that county has multiple zones. It\'s gonna take some time figuring out which areas will be best for me. A state with OTC tags may be the best place to get my feet wet while stacking up pref points.

If it is a option where you plan on hunting, gettin cow tags can be easier, an allow you to scout/hunt the area you are gonna bull hunt in. learning the area while hunting. depends on what your goals are. if your goal is to learn how to hunt elk and do it yearly or semi often then that is a good way to go rather than huntin another state that will prob be diff in terrain etc. if your goal is to just kill a elk and hav a good time, think about (dont throw anything at me) a guide. while it is expensive, if your looking at coming one time and getting your elk you will prob save money over the long run. for example, my cousin has went to colorado three time. 1800 in tags. he bought equipment for it like backpack to get elk out, sleeping bags, tent, food, small cooking stove, rangefinder, gps unit, etc. several more hundred dollars. gas hotels etc all add into it. also help with getting it out and better chance of taking one. while he has been close to killing one he hasnt gotten it done yet. so, while almost all on here hunt yearly it all depends on your goal. are you wanting to have the experience and be done, or make this a long term thing.
