Dove Hunting

Just got back from a couple of days of dove hunting...man, what a difference a year makes. Last year, we limited out by 9:00 the first morning. This year, we probably didn\'t see that many doves all day. The weather really had a drastic effect on the doves where we hunt. They have gotten so much rain this year that there is water everywhere and because of that the doves were scattered like crazy. Oh well, still had a great time!

In between the hunts during mid day we went out and did a bunch more shooting with the rifles. Everything is sighted in and ready to go. Now I just have to watch the calendar and live vicariously through the archery guys...

We have been very lucky so far with it being very dry. I am heading out tonight to try to snag a few!
I hope it dries up a bit for you!

Limited out last year?

I haven\'t been dove hunting for a while, but never did find a way to carry enough shells to limit out.

Perhaps that will be a good use for a pack horse someday ... or a reason to get one of those trailers for the ATV!

At about 10 rounds/bird, and a 15 bird limit, them things are expensive!

John, you aren\'t kidding! LOL!

Last year, we loaded up 300 shells for three guys for that trip. After that first morning, we had to buy more before the next day  Those things are fast, that\'s for sure. It is always fun to hunt doves and then go hunt pheasants...after hunting doves, shooting a pheasant is like trying to shoot a blimp out of the sky!

We used dove to help pass the time til duck season years ago... I think the limit then was 10... They were a bit harder to hit than mallard duck...  But we managed to kill our limits with less that a box of shells..

We know tune-up durin\' the early teal season... 6 duck limit... We shoot 10 or 12 shells for a limit of um so it\' cheaper in the long run since we shoot the same steel shot durin\' early teal season that we shoot durin\' the real deal duck season...

In the regular duck season there is a 15 shell limit for a 4 duck limit where we hunt in the flooded timber (only 3 mallard or 3 wood duck any combonation of the 2)... Shootin\' in the timber is a bit different than in the open but we normally have shells left over when we limit out... That\'s all except one or two or three... :D :D They have to borrow shells to finish out their limit...  We normally don\'t charge but $3.00 per shell in the woods...  Sometimes if it\'s real bad they have to buy breakfast... :upthumb: :upthumb:

I have never heard of a shell limit Phil, that\'s interesting. It would sure make guys have to practice! I definitely wouldn\'t want to be the guy who has to ask for more shells, at least with the guys I hunt with

Derek, it\'s a state WMA that is well know by most duck hunters... The reason for the reduced duck limit and shell limit was given as a way to reduce overcrowdin\' on the WMA and also to reduce sky bustin\' there is a shot size limit of no larger than #2 steel in the area... It\' ok but some still disregard the 15 shell rule and shot size limit until they get caught... Last I heard the fine was $360 per shell and thaat was several years ago... Reason I know is there was a friend of my ol\'est son that normally doesn\'t hunt with us was and had one #BB size shot in his position... He never hunted with us again... We always joke about shells costin\' $3.00 but always just give um shells to finish there limit... If and when I get to where it takes me more than 15 shells in the timber I guess I\'ll just stay home...

NAW... I\'ll just get \"payback\" for all the shells I\'ve given to others... :mg: :mg:

yep arky, there is a 10 shell limit for geese an the local refuge in central mo. at least it used to be that. reason was they were trying to reduce sky busting. stopped alot of that.

Ya\'ll gota understand my duck huntin\' is about like my deer huntin\' except my boys have to get me as close with a boat as they can... That means more work for um but they don\'t seem to mind... They want let me operate a boat anymore... Fooled um last year... Me and one of our huntin\' buddies went... Didn\'t feel safe with um operatein\' the boat so I did... Got a good tounge lashin\' when we got home... :D :D But I made it out a the woods alive... :angle: :angle:

Off to a great start on the year Dan! Looks like you might need to invest in a new freezer fairly soon though

Phil, I like the idea on the limited shells. Any way you can reduce sky busting is a good thing. The shot size maximum is kind of weird too, although it probably serves the same purpose. And I suppose you don\'t really NEED anything larger than 2\'s with ducks.
