Checked and pulled my camera today.
I was somewhat disappointed that the batteries didnt last until this weekend, but oh well :)

I got some new bulls that came thru along with a cow elk.

These are right in front of one of my tree stands - like 10yds

Always fun to see deer too.
Especially since the herd is on the rebound

Do you have a goal this year Brad? Or a preference in what you are going to shoot?

Wait on a bigger bull? Or first fat cow that walks by?

Great pictures

I will have both an E/S tag and a cow only tag in my pocket.
I want to fill the cow tag first, but any of these nice 5x5s would be getting an arrow if the conditions are right!

Even if I decide to take a raghorn, I have a bear tag in my pocket too and I will relocate a tree stand over the carcass to take a bear.
So in essence, its all related!

Looks great, Brad ... the season is getting closer. Can\'t wait to see your photo with one of them.

wow wow wow!!!! Sounds like you could have a very interesting year! I hope you can put an arrow through one of those 5x5s

Nice Brad I look forward to seeing one on the meat pole when I get to check in again. :upthumb:

Thanks everyone!
Did anyone notice the temperature when that cow walked by? On Aug 6????

I hope my back hurts from packing a bunch of elk this next week.

There has definitely been a change this last week ... (although, I know August 6 was not \"last week\") ... Was camping all weekend at a little past 8000\' and it was COLD ... even though it warmed up at the peak of the day, the mornings and evenings were downright autumnal ... fall is in the air!

It has definitely been noticable in the Denver area the last few days...I am getting overly anxious and I still have a long time to wait :x

Here are a couple from my cams that I checked this last Saturday. These were way early in august but still cool pics.

Love seeing those temps in the 30s...it\'s a good sign, indeed!

Holy smokes stringunner!!!!!

Great pictures.

I have a question for I guess everyone.

How big are the average herds and are they in herds right now? I see that picture is them grouped up, does it stay like that near pre rut?

There can be herds like that in many areas.
Other spots will have onesy, twosy, threesy
All depends on pressure, terrain and who knows what else

Thanks Brad. I would almost guess that for someone would prefer a smaller herd than a larger one? Less eyes and noses to deal with?

For bowhunters, absolutely. Less eyes is better.

As far as the herd question, one thing to keep in mind is that elk are much more of a \'herd\' animal than deer. Deer tend to wander on their own or in very small groups. That picture is a typical herd of elk at any given time during the year, not just during the rut or a specific timeframe. I am not saying that you will not run across a cow by itself, because it definitely does happen. The frequency of it is just way less than deer. Hence, elk are far more difficult to find and hunt than deer.
