Reed Exhibitions has decided to postpone, for now, the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show given the controversy surrounding its decision to limit the sale or display of modern sporting rifles (also called ARs) at the event. The show was scheduled to take place February 2-10 in Harrisburg, PA.

“Our original decision not to include certain products in the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show this year was made in order to preserve the event’s historical focus on the hunting and fishing traditions enjoyed by American families,” said Chet Burchett, Reed Exhibitions President for the Americas. “In the current climate, we felt that the presence of MSRs would distract from the theme of hunting and fishing, disrupting the broader experience of our guests. This was intended simply as a product decision, of the type event organizers need to make every day.

“It has become very clear to us after speaking with our customers that the event could not be held because the atmosphere of this year’s show would not be conducive to an event that is designed to provide family enjoyment. It is unfortunate that in the current emotionally charged atmosphere this celebratory event has become overshadowed by a decision that directly affected a small percentage of more than 1,000 exhibits showcasing products and services for those interested in hunting and fishing.

“ESS has long been proud to participate in the preservation and promotion of hunting and fishing traditions, and we hope that as the national debate clarifies, we will have an opportunity to consider rescheduling the event when the time is right to focus on the themes it celebrates.”

Congrats to all of those who took a stand and let the majority finally be heard.  My hats off to you.

+1,
from the list of cancellations from vendors that I have seen they may as well just cancel the show.

Well it is pretty obvious that they don't "get" that their decision directly affects this community. They are thinking about sales of a product, while everyone else is thinking about the bigger picture.

1+ on hating politics.

Those vendors who supported the boycott do so at a tremendous cost, a lot of the vendors are local sporting goods retailers who stock up in products. for the show traffic that now have to sit on excess inventory. Help them out if we can support their online presence.

Just goes to show you don't mess with sportsmen. Reminds me of a judge in Utah a few years ago that stepped out of bounds right before the election. Needless to say Utah hunters made a stand and she is no longer a judge. We can be strong if we all stick together.

Here are some local news clips regarding this:

Jan. 25: The loss of the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show, because really, who expects it to be rescheduled, will mean a projected $43 million loss to the region.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

MyNortheastOutdoors.com will be building and hosting a “Virtual Sports Show” online for vendors who have pulled out of the show. Companies will be able to post their items for sale at no cost. McConnell said he hopes vendors will be able to use the website to earn back money they spent on booth space for the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show.
“Some guys have some serious cash rolled into it,” he said.
The website will be open to vendors by Friday.  The general public will be able to browse the site by the first day of the show, which runs from Feb. 2 to 10 at the state Farm Show Complex.
“Instead of going to the show they can stay at home and shop at the vendors online,” McConnell said.

I have not verified this, but sounds like a great idea.
