will bears run elk off or do they ignore each other. ive seen em both in the same area a couple hours apart. but the bear may have been just traveling thru, not living there.

I have never witnessed a bear/elk encounter, but I am thinking they don\'t mix company well. I have made a cardboard bear and plan to see if I can place it where I don\'t want an elk. I think this could be tricky as I don\'t want to scare the elk out of the area. I have a place planned out where I think it may help. We will see. Don\'t worry Stringunner, I am not setting it near your stand.

I have trail cam pics of elk then a bear then different elk all within 30 minutes of each other. I have several of these pics at different stands. I don\'t know if this answers your questions, but I don\'t think either really bother each other much at least where I hunt.

Swede I\'m after a bear this year, I hope I don\'t shoot your card board cut out on accident! :problem:

thanks guys. i wasnt sure if i should move on if i see a bear, assuming i dont kill a bear of course. i would rather kill a bear than a elk

Where we hunt we see bear and elk in the same areas quite often. Last year after a heavy rain I found two sets of bear tracks and elk tracks following the same trail.

The only time a black bear is interested in an elk is when the elk is dead, or it finds a calf.

Last year we watched about 25 cows filter right past (20yds) my buddies dead bull while a nice 300lb chocalate fed on him. He musta just found him cuz all he ate was the nuts  Only half of proof of sex came out with that guy

Here in NW MT bears will actually come in to the calling. I opted not to go a spot Where I wanted to call in some elk for a buddy and get it on film after a local landowner told me there was 1 really big black bear and 4 grizzly bears in the creek bottom. maybe more. He said a couple of bow hunters were cow calling and a big old boar grizzly came right in and put those guys up a tree and stayed there for 4 hours. I knew there were also 60 to 70 elk there but decided it wasn\'t worth the risk. It seems like almost Every year bow hunters are attacked by bears here in MT.

Yes, calling brings in all predators. Including cats.

Yea good point!
I got a text last fall with a picture of a mountain lion he shot that came in to mere feet while he was calling a herd of elk. Elk went running right by him and then he called to stop them and a cat came right at him. He drew back and whacked it.
I had the same thing happen 3 years ago but all I had was a head shot and the cat was just peeking over a log.

we called in a at cat two years ago during a calling sequence. I had tagged out already and was behind my buddy about 45 yards doing the calling. After about 5 minutes into the set, he comes screaming, bow above his head, walking backwards back to wear I was. His eyes were big and he said \"cat, really big, lets go.\" We walked back to the truck before he told me the whole story. Apparently the cat snuck in and was crouched about 6-7 feet from him before he saw it...apparently just in time. Funny part was, he was pretty insistent on changing his clothes before he got in the truck.

same here. i was chasing evening bugles when i came across what i thought was an elk moving through some rocks. it turned out to be a black bear at 20 yards. i moved on when an elk bugled 150 yards away.

I have called in several bears while calling elk.
They come in fast.
The best way to not encounter bears during season is to have a bear tag.
Like I did last year.... ;)

I had a bear tag in my pocket and an urge to shoot a bear that came under my stand. The urge to urinate on it was stronger, so that is what I chose to do.

To me this is strong evidence that bears will take on an elk if the opportunity is right. I feel comfortable saying, no elk is going to hang around with a bear coming in on them, even though they inhabit the same territory.

The bears came in on a bugle, or cow calls?

Cow calls

Yes, that makes sense. A cow call could be a calf too. A bear will go after them every chance they get. Maybe an injured cow too. I really doubt a black will go after a bull like a grizzly will.

We actually got this on film last Season. My buddy was sitting a waterhole, and a group of elk came in. Just as he was drawing back on a 5x5 bull, a big black bear came running toward the herd and scattered them (thinking he was going to get a calf). My buddy threw a stick at the bear \'cause he got too close for his comfort :haha:

I still have to get around to posting it on You Tube.

I killed a gorgeous cinnamon blond bear that came to cow-calf calls. Shot him out in the sagebrush.

I\'ve watched bears skirt elk herds where the elk just watched warily. My buddy watched one run down a 5x bull and kill it when he was guiding.
