i am looking for some instruction on calling elk or getting better at it and was wondering what is the best thing to do? Do i need to order some instructional videos on bugling, meuws and when to call and when not to also when enough is enough. thanks

Ordering videos or CDs is one way. It is easy to find some good free material here on the internet, but you need to look around. My advise to any beginner is to keep your calling basic. Basic is all you want to work with. A lot of the discussion you read about is interesting and fun, but the last thing you need to frustrate yourself with at the moment of truth is questions about what the elk said, and which call should to use now. One of these days John Fitzgerald, Troy and maybe some others will get their heads together and write up a good one or two page list of calls, with some BASIC instructions that are easy to remember. Any of us will be able to print off those two pages to study and remember. That list could include some internet sites to access to hear the sounds we need. It could also be all together in one place.
There are some interesting books and CDs out there that you can spend hours to go through just once. Some you are supposed to carry with you in the forest and get them out when you hear a bull call. What a terrible time to try to figure out what to do. I would rather have three basic calls I could choose between, than a whole pack of instructions to confuse myself with at that time. John had 7 or 8 calls to know and understand. It was simple, and I think anyone could remember them.
How about it John, can you and Troy come up with that list and some basic instructions? It would sure be handy if we could access them with the right sounds by clicking on an icon on the side.

Here is a YouTube link that cover some basic calling.
I think they are pretty helpful and realistic

Im sure some others will chime in with more info

Here is a link to a complete seminar by Corey Jacobsen. It describes a very simple calling system that just plane works.

Also get on YouTube and type in (elk calling). Look for guys like Troy Bungay, Joel Turner, Brian Langley, Rockie Jacobsen, And Corey Jacobsen. These are all first class callers as well as world champion elk callers.

I hope you enjoy the seminar and hope it helps!

Here is another of Corey\'s seminars. It is basically the same as the other one but maybe a little twist here and there.

O wow thanks a lot guys on all the info going to sit down on my couch and watch away and take notes. Thanks for taking the time to post the video clips.

That Corey Jacobson really has some great info and is a great video, very educational for me probably not as much for u experienced elk hunters. All the other videos are great as well thanks for posting guys. Hopefully I can put this together this year and kill my first bull in colorado if I draw the unit.

Another thing to remember about \"getting better\" (post 1) at calling is, that making a quality bugle or cow call is only a part of what is needed. Being set up in the right location to make the call is necessary. Using supplemental sounds can be very important. Supplemental things for the elk to see can be vital. This is where Elkmtngear\'s or other quality decoys can be worth their weight in gold.
Some people can bring in a wary bull for a good shot opportunity. Guys like Troy Bungay, are good at this. There are hunters that can get bulls to come closer, but they hang up out of shooting range. Swede is one of these hunters. Some hunters just scare the elk off. Careless and impatient hunters are all good at this.
I am going out on a limb here, but I don\'t think most of us have the time or energy to become a Troy Bungay. It takes years of practice, and even if you can get there, you will do a lot of hunting before you reach that peak. In the meantime you want to be killing elk. Between now and the start of the next archery season, you have time to get proficient enough to get elk. Remember making the perfect call is not everything. If you can\'t call them into your lap, then you need to go to them or hunt with a shooter that extends your effective range.
I will start another thread in a little while, to compliment this one. In that thread lets explore and explain what we do, and what we avoid to make calling more effective.

Well, I\'m here to tell you that calling is not like bike riding ... once you \"have it\", you don\'t necessarily \"keep it\" without practice.

Two and three years ago, I worked hard to improve my calling, and I thought I was doing pretty well at it.

Last year, I focused elsewhere, and I didn\'t like the sound of my calling one bit. Oh, it was reasonable, and it worked ... and, after all, I\'m eating elk this winter and the last two I was on a pronghorn diet, so, like others said, calling ain\'t everything.

This year, I want to work on my calling more.

Very true i think and what i have heard and read many people don\'t have the right set up or are impatient and rush shots. thanks for the info

what calls do u think i should order, i have the push hootcha momma, and thats about it. I was looking at elk101 website and they had a package put together with a tube and two different mouth pieces. what are your thoughts

Brady, do yourself a big favor. Don\'t order anything. Call Troy at Glacier Country Hunting Calls and have him advise you. There is more to calling than biting and blowing. What are you trying to call? (cow? bull?, big bull?) Do you know your area and the elk in it? Is a call your primary elk gittin tool or is it a supplement? Troy can set you on a solid coarse with a plan. It doesn\'t hurt that he is a good guy too.

What a braggart! Now I am feeling quite envious, but you made some great points.

Not only does your skill deteriorate over time, but diaphragms can too. I have noticed my diaphragms lose their quality in a few years even though I store them in the basement in a drawer. The basement is cool and it is dark in the drawer. Still they don\'t last forever. Do any of you advanced callers you your diaphragms for more than one season? If so how many?

the area I\'m going to hunt doesn\'t have huge bulls but I\'m going after a bull. i will give him a call and visit with him and see what he has to say. thanks

Please send me that Hoochie Mama so I can dispose of it properly for you! :wtf:

Nothing beats a diaphragm call. But for some people they are hard to learn to use. Try several until you find one that fits just right. Troy of Glacier Country Calls makes some good ones as does Rockie Jacobsen from Bugling Bull Calls. Luckily, diaphrams are cheap so you won\'t have to break the bank in order to find the one that works best for you.

Like others stated, get some GCHC reeds. If you\'re going after a bull, make sure you can blow them at least well or good. But that\'s just 1/4 of the battle. You also need to understand the elk language is not complicated, but strategies for hunting/calling can be.

Many think it\'s not necessary to completely understand what a particular sound means. I\'m glad that strategy works for them but for me I need to know. Calling for elk is an action and reaction game. Last year my crew filled 3 out of 6 bull tags. Every one of then I knew exactly what the bull meant when he sounded off. Then my shooters and I reacted accordingly.
