I drew a muzzleloader tag for unit 6A in New Mexico this year and have never hunted that unit before. Anybody ever hunted there, and/or have any recommendation for where to hunt?
Welcome!
Are you in state (or nearby) to scout the unit?
I\'ve been hiking in the San Pedro Parks Wilderness (http://www.greatoutdoors.com/published/ ... edro-parks) recently. It\'s been getting tons of rain and is very green, so there\'s plenty of streams, creeks, and seeps. If you\'re willing to hike in and look for active game trails, that might be a good bet. I\'ve seen plenty of fresh sign and a few small herds there. Mostly cows and calves...but we saw a couple of fresh rubs last weekend, as well.
Let us know what you find, or PM me if you have any questions about the wilderness area.
Thank you for the information. I will be making a scouting trip in September to check things out. It is a good drive from my residence so, going there on a frequent basis is not possible. The article you sent is great. I appreciate the help.
I hope it helps, and hope you see something when you scout. I would avoid hunting near San Gregorio Reservoir (although it\'s good fishing), since that\'s where much of the human activity is. There\'s plenty of water and elk habitat just about everywhere else in the park. If you have a good 4WD, you should be able to drive (and camp) pretty close to the San Pedro wilderness border and hike in each day or even backpack in. And like many places, if you go a mile or more off the roads, you probably won\'t run into too many other people, hunters or otherwise. There should be some good drainages that serve as funnels for elk traveling to and from bedding and feeding sites.
Good luck!
