If 2,3 or more hunters go on an elk hunt and only one hunter scores, should you or would you divide the meat equally.
The one I got this fall was divided between me and my hunting partner. I figured he helped skin, butcher and pack it out, he should get half. Making the shot is my bonus but the meat should be split equally. He also asked to pay half the butcher processing cost, which I agreed to.
How do you lucky hunters do it?

We usually have a rule that the shooter gets 1/2 and the rest is divided amongst the others.  Generally that assumes the others help to pack it out.  This works pretty good unless you have a really big group.  This gives some credit to the shooter for their skill or luck.

Definitely something that needs to be discussed well before the hunt so everyone agrees and is on the same page! I use to go to CO every year with my dad and a friend and we always agreed that all the meat would be split equally between us, usually the guy who shot it would get the most :)

I just let them know that if i get something then i will split it all with them.  Like you said shooting it is a bonus and also putting the mount on the wall is a great bonus as well.

The only elk hunting partners I have are family members......no one else reliable enough yet. Anyways, we always say if one person gets a kill they will take care of their elk while the other(s) continue their hunt.

It never works out that way, we always end up helping with the meat transport, so we always end up splitting themeat equally.

Seems like the group of guys I take with me grows every year (had 9 of us last year).  But everyone knows that we all have to bust our asses to set up/break down camp and haul all the meat down the mountain.  A lot of work goes into our rifle season, so we split everything equally (work, food, beer, meat, costs).

I started off elk hunting with another group of guys that were supposed to have the same deal (until we had a year where we needed to split 2 elk between 8 guys), but then the two guys that shot elk decided they should get all the meat (even though they didn't haul any of it out).  So I moved on and started my own camp with guys that know the deal and work a lot harder and drink less.

I split 50/50 with my hunting partner- it seems to take alot of the " who gets to take the shot" pressure off  because it really does not matter when you know either way you will have meat in the freezer

Richard, you must have had fun getting him out of that position  ;D ... We all go out after these animals and just don't think about how big they are until we see them on the ground!

last two elk were taken solo, so no need to split, but when i did shoot a bull with a huntig partner we split but not 50 / 50 - my hunting buddy already had a freezer full of deer, bear and antelope, so I offered up the split on choice cuts and the hamburger meat I kept to share with my family and friends that every season are looking to see 'what I got'.
90% of my hunting and fishing is solo so I dont have to consider it to much but when I do hunt with a partner its always offered to be shared with those that are actually putting in the effort.  never hunted in a party more than 4

stay thristy my friends!

My family and I will easily eat more than a whole elk every year.  My hunting partners & their families do not eat near that much so I always offer to share with them if they run out but since they are typically as successful as I am we usually just take our own and come back and help the other fill their tag.  That being said during Utah archery season my hunting partner insisted that I take half his bull, he still had plenty in the freezer and mine was empty.  Luckily we both took a cow on a draw hunt as well so both our freezers are plenty full.

Interesting subject and it gets a guy to thinking.  Between my hunting buddy and I, we've killed plenty of elk together but its never been an issue.  He shoots it, he takes the meat.  I shoot it, I take the meat.  We both pack for each other w/ no expectations of a return.  The one thing we continue to do is hunt hard for each other until we're both tagged out.  Its been a good system for many years.

Fortunately I went with a guy who will only shoot "big" 5 points or six points so I get to set up on all the smaller bulls which I'm fine with cause I meat hunt anyway. I can usually get mine fairly quick so we take care of it and then head back to the hills to get his bull. We are both fine with the other person getting all their animal, because we are childhood friends and have helped each other out countless times and that is just what friends do haha.

If you hunt with me I only want a few steaks, a roast or two, and a little burger and you can have the rest. I will even pay for the processing. The only other option in my book is we get the whole thing jerked and split up evenly or we just donate it but still pay the processing fees.
