Elk rattle cage

I'll be using Rocky's elk rattle cage this year in Montana during the first and second week of September. Do you guys have any ideas regarding how to use it in different situations?

One example...closing in silently after getting a response to a location bugle and then using the box once we get into the threat zone? Good idea or not?

A more obvious example...cold call setup incorporating the box into a variety of elk sounds?

Any other ideas and/or scenarios?

On another subject...I got a kick out of watching 'The Linguists'. The Wayne Carlton article about using a turkey call for elk was what got my partner and I started into elk hunting/calling. We read the article in Field and Stream or Sports Afield, went out and bought some bows, practiced a lot with shooting and the diaphragms, and got a bull that first year. We've been at it ever since.

We probably watched the 'Elk Fever' video by Larry Jones a couple hundred times. I got a kick out of hearing Steven Jones say he'd 'hunker down here' in that video.

Good stuff...I was surprised that we were there at the beginning. Obviously, although we were there at the beginning, we've been overtaken by a whole bunch of more accomplished elk fanatics. Never the less, chasing elk isn't too far from my mind all year round.

Your first example is what I would do.

I'd be trying to sneak within 100 yards or less of that bull.
That's when I'd start with the call and begin scanning!
That bull will most likely sneak in quietly verse coming in vocal.

Good luck to you, I've heard some really good podcasts that discuss this tactic and it seems to be a very useful early season while bulls are still establishing a pecking order.

Thanks for the feedback. Are you able to direct me to any of those podcasts regarding using rattling?

I'll have to go check my phone. I'll PM you some of the podcast titles!

I agree with DTP, anything, generally speaking, under 100yds will get a response.  Depending on the phase of the rut you could have a super pissed bull wanting to ward off anyone trying to steal his cows or he could, again as DTP said, sneak in quietly. I've never used this tactic myself but that zone 100 or under seems to be a green light for tactics trying to pull a bull off his cows trying to show his dominance of his cows.  Let us know how it works!!
