Anybody hunt turkeys in the fall? In Mn. you can get a fall turkey tag over the counter and its good for either sex. I think I will pick one up for when I head down to my uncles place to hunt deer. I see them quite often while on stand. Never hunted them in the fall before.

Francis
a couple years ago we went up to Nebraska ML deer hunting in December.
My son had a deer and turkey tag and he shot a nice big hen.
They were in groups and he ambushed them as the came by

Go for it. its fun

I picked one up for Oklahoma. There are not a bunch, but there are some where I hunt. I would love to take a turkey with the bow!

Neighbor told me the other day that the area closest to us is now OTC for residents ...

I said \"I don\'t know if I have a scabbard for a shotgun, but it\'d be fun to hunt \'em by horseback.\"

He replied \"In Wyoming, you can use a rifle.\"

I\'m now thinking of what rifle to take! Season goes from October 1 through the end of December.

That sounds like that would be a fun way to hunt them John. I wonder if they would as spooky around a horse.

We can kill two with a shotgun in MO. I used to hunt them when I was younger but kind of lost interest in it. They\'re pretty easy if you scatter a young flock. Bachelor flocks of gobblers are a little harder to call in but can be done fairly easy just takes a while for them to re group compared to young flocks. I finally decided I would quit killing them in the fall and save them for spring as I enjoy that much more. For those that are hunting them this fall, just scatter a young flock and give them about 10 minutes. You can call them back quickly just listen for the mamma hen and make sure she doesn\'t re group them away from you. It\'s a fast paced hunt once you scatter them and those young birds do eat well. I also made it a point to not shoot the hens though. Hens and jakes are hard to tell apart this time of year but pay attention to the heads. Hens won\'t have that white crust on top of their head and typically their wattles are not as pronounced. Hens are also shorter than jakes if you them standing side by side for comparison. Saving the hens will mean more birds in the spring!!! Enjoy and good luck.

i was in the same boat as steve. our population went way down for whatever reason an we quit hunting them with a scattergun an i never took it up again cause i wanted them in the spring. but, in mo you get a turkey tag with your archery deer tag so if one wants to commit suicide an i can find a place to hunt i am willing.

francis, I took up fall hunting when they started it a few years ago. I have had real good luck hanging around hay fields. anything with grass sucks them in this time of year.... here is a group of toms/jakes in someone\'s yard this morning while on patrol. i will shoot anything during the fall hunt. we have a ton of birds around here and I really enjoy eating them! Gary how is the acorn crop down that way. At my uncles place all his fields are in beans this year but the farm down the road let\'s my hunt a big pasture that has a lot of big oaks in it. The years that have a good acorn crop I see allot of turkeys and deer in it.

francis, idk about around here, i have been in the woods yet. but, out west where we duck hunted, the acrorn crop was huge. it has been wet, so i would guess it as good.
