We asked the question in last week's Free Gear Friday about what is left for you to accomplish before heading to elk camp. To expand on that, what are some last minute reminders of things everyone should do before heading out?

Make a gear list to check off as you pack. While you pack inspect gear for functionality. But with so many small items a list is critical for me since next time won?t see the gear until I need it and it?s not there...

A few random things that come to mind:

- Check for fire restrictions in your hunt area and plan ahead.
- Vehicle maintenance.
- Make sure your bow is tuned up.

One thing to add to this: try to put a gear list together on your computer and save it. That way you can update it each year. I've been doing this forever and it makes for a very solid list after a few years, although I still tinker with it too.

Notify your credit union or bank that you will be traveling so they don't lock your visa card......no fun

cut your toenails........

Make sure your license is signed and make sure if you're hunting with a minor that their license is signed.

That mistake cost me an hour one morning while pheasant hunting. I forgot to have my son sign his license and the officer decided to hold us at the truck while he read me the riot act as the sun was coming up opening day.

Since I mostly truck camp these days, my food/meal list is almost as important as my gear list!

Like Derek, I have a gear list that has been modified over the years from bivy/backpack to trailhead to campsite and now leaning towards hotel!  :)

While you don't want to forget arrows with your bow, I feel the same about forgetting pickled cherry pepper relish for my Italian sandwiches, tortillas for carne asada, cornbread for stew,...you get the idea.  What's a baked potato without butter and sour cream and maybe bacon crumbles?  Pop Tarts?

Sharpen those broadheads!!
