Long time archer, but new hunter and new forum member. Going on my first elk hunt this September after dreaming about it since I was a kid. Wish me luck and hopefully I will be following this up with a success story in about 3 months. Good luck to everyone on their hunts this fall.

Welcome to the site clueless! And welcome to the addiction of elk hunting

Best of luck this year! Let us know if any questions come up as you prepare. There are a lot of knowledgeable folks that hang around here :upthumb:

Thanks cohunter.  I've been studying hours a day and prepping for months now. I have an archery background so no real concerns there. I've done most of my escouting and building multiple backup plans. I work on my calling almost every day. I believe I've got almost all my gear lined up. I know it's my first hunt, but overall I am feeling confident in my plan and am just going to trust my preparation. Just need 23 September to hurry up and get here.

Where in Tx are you coming from and do you have a unit in Colorado that you intend to hunt ?

WELL MY FRIEND, SOLO HUNTS ARE VERY DIFFERENT, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A PLAN IF YOU GET ONE DOWN, MAKE DANG SURE PEOPLE KNOW WHERE YOU WILL BE, AND I SUGGEST A SAT PHONE AND OR ANOTHER FORM OF COMMUNICATION WITH THE OUTSIDE WORLD.  WAYYYY TO MANY THINGS CAN GO WRONG IN THE MOUNTAINS.  BEEN THERE, DONE THAT!  I ADMIRE THE SOLO THING, BUT ITS NOT FOR ME...IM TOO OLD LOL.  (OR AT LEAST FEEL LIKE I AM LOL)  GET AS FAR AWAY FROM ROADS AND PEOPLE AS YOU CAN. AND STILL POSSIBLY PACK AN ELK OUT BEFORE IT SPOILS.  FEEL FREE TO HOLLER AT ME FOR ANY ADVISE, OR SUGGESTIONS...IM NOT A PRO, BUT HAVE BEEN GOING SINCE 2000.  GOOD LUCK AND KEEP YOUR WITTS ABOUT YOU!

Clueless, thanks for the information. I was looking for someone down that way that could drop me off some mesquite wood for knife handles if they were hunting in northwest Colorado.

I would suggest having the ability to set up a base camp. Having the option of having some comfort. It is a lot to take on in my opinion, to come to a new area and backpack with the intention of taking a large animal. Having a way to deal with that animal once down is paramount. A large cooler and a place to get ice plus maybe a processor. If you take an animal the last day of the hunt, using a processor may not be an option for a long travel home. It may take 2-3 days to have your meat processed and frozen for the trip home on dry ice. If solo and packing out several miles you are looking at multiple trips and time which may require two days or more. They sell block ice in several places and those last the longest. Just trying to make some suggestions on making a successful adventure. Good Luck and have Fun!

Thanks for all the input guys, I think I've got these details worked out so hopefully it will all come together. Just reviewing plans and waiting for September. I'll let yall know how it goes.

Just a follow up to the post.

Unfortunately did not punch my tag. Overall a very quiet rut experience which I'm seeing is true for many other hunters as well. I didn't find a bull until day 3 and so I worked him hard. At first he wasnt interested but after getting really emotional with my calling/raking he started to get worked up too. I could just never "flip that switch" in him and get him to come in to me, it was probably 150 yards between us. The brush was too thick for me to quietly sneak in either. On day 4, I found another bull that was just softly bugeling, so I did the same thing, I was very aggressive to try and get him worked up and come in but he wasnt interested in the slightest, just slowly went his own way and didn't pay me no mind. After that nothing.

Overall, an amazing first time trip just to experience talking back and forth with a bull. Already planning next years trip. Hope yall were more successful in bringing the meat home.
