I am new to elk hunting as well as new to this forum so thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide! My father and I are planning a drop camp hunt in GMU 54 for the 3rd rifle season. We are set up with West Elk Wilderness Outfitters up in the West Elk Wilderness for the drop camp. Neither one of us have elk hunted before but have a lot of experience with hunting in general. We have been wanting to do this since I was a little kid but growing up my Dad was in the Army and was constantly moving or getting deployed and never had the time or money to go. As he retired I joined the military as well and have been really busy the last 8 years with that and raising a family of my own. We are finally both at a place where we have the time and money to go and my dad isn't getting any younger so we are just going for it. We have both already applied for cow tags for the 3rd season and plan on buying OTC bull tags as well (wishful thinking!). This may be the only time we ever get to go so we want to be able to have the option for either sex, since they not longer sell either sex tags for that area. We are definitely not picky and will take whatever opportunity presents its self. With all that being said, I was just hoping someone out there is familiar with the area and could possibly give me some pointers. Thank you for any advice and good luck to everyone with the draw this year!

Welcome to the forum. I am new here too. I have hunted 54 down in the southwest corner just above the damn on Blue Mesa. A mixture of Private and National Forest. Hunted 2nd week their on tow occasions. Had snow both times.
Be sure you are both in excellent shape. Get in shape. Get in shape and Get in shape! If you can, try to get to Colorado a day or two early so your body will start getting acclimated to the higher elevations. Make sure you have rain gear/snow gear. Be sure to dress in layers. 3rd season will most likely be snow on the ground at the higher elevations. Make sure you have sunglasses!Try to get a ballistics charts for your caliber and your bullet type so that you can print out the sheet, laminate it and tape it on your rifle stock. Have a good range finder & great optics along with you. Do some long range shooting before you go and know your rifles capabilities. Make sure you have survival gear in your back pack and fire starter with you at all times. Be sure the drop camp has plenty of firewood.

Best of luck & I wish you both a successful father & son adventure.

Most definitely get in shape.  It is beautiful country in there.  Ive bow hunted it once, and will be going back in there this year....
