i love me some elk hunting. but getting a tag is problematic. i hunt OTC all the time and it is awesome.
my brother and i have some untapped deer potential. we both killed our first mulies at this ranch in NM. we were both such rookies we did so much wrong. for example, i killed my (1st) deer at the furthest and highest mountain on the property. why were we even up there? we had lame cheap binos and we saw \"brown bodies\" at the top. young and dumb be climbed up for a closer look.. turned out they were big-horn sheep. blew us away. we were that high! at the top with them, was my mulie. just when i fired i heard my brother wonder out loud..\"how are we going to get it down?\" WHUMP! the deer toppled over. we had to climb off the mountain we were on just to climb up the next to recover the deer. like idiots we dragged it back. hahahhaahha. i had NO CLUE how to do the gutless boning method. hell, i barely got the gut portion of the job done right..we dragged it for miles. it was awful.
my brother killed his first the next day. much closer to my jeep.
the owner passed away, and his son runs the place now. he keeps asking when we are coming back. maybe this year. he will sign and allow us to hunt. no deer draw needed! i\'ve never done it, but the F&G lady said there is a OTC option for guys that have written permission.
i bet i killed that deer in 2002..or 2000. i\'ve been bowhunting primarily now, and our deer locating skills have blossomed. we wont blindly hike about like idiots hoping to run across a deer. spotting scopes and smart hiking.
i cant wait! my brother still longs for a big elk..that day will come too. i know it.
i honestly just love hunting. the target animal is just a detail for me.
we do have some elk pokers in the fire. i dont know how this year is going to play out.
good luck BTO deer hunters.
