I am planning on hunting western CO and currently there is a forest fire burning 9 miles west of where I usually hunt. How will the smoke etc.. affect the elk in the area??? Bull Run Fire.
That's a really good question. I would think that elk and all wildlife would move away, but in looking at this picture, they might sit tight until they really have to. I don't remember when this photo was taken, but wow, it's a stunning photo. As dry as it is out west, find a source of water and you'll find elk. As for safety, keep an eye on the weather conditions. The reports from CA on how fast some of those fires have spread are crazy. You could be in a bad situation if the wind turns and moves the fire in another direction. Be careful and good luck!
I am curious as well with this topic. Can a fire this close be used to a hunters advantage as it pushes the elk from the unit the fires in to another unit close by? Or does it push the elk far away from any area close to the fire? Is the air quality post fire tough to hike in or does it clear out quick after fire is contained?
