Gear modification on my wok

Okay, the title should get at least some curiosity views! Many years ago, I ran into a guy who made steel woks out of a disc off a plow. Pretty cool so I had him make me one. It woks great(pun intended)!

The problem I\'ve had is the bottom of the wok sits too close to the flame and I can\'t adjust the flame low enough so things cook way, way too fast and simmering is out of the question.

I had my Dad weld on some tension bolts to elevate when I first started using it but still too low.

Options I see are:

1) Reduce flame output, if possible, and leave rest as it is
2) Raise height of bolts

First thought was to put the nuts back on the bolt but I think I need around 2\" more height so that wouldn\'t do it. Next thought was to weld something on top of the bolts. Third thought was to get a 5-6\" piece of 3/4\" pipe that would fit down over the bolt threads but not bigger than the head of the bolt. Only possible shortcoming here is the bolts are 3\" long now and if I put a 6\" pipe over it then it will be wobbly.

Any suggestions?

I would weld the nuts on the inside of that ring, get longer bolts that thread up/down to adjust the height you want.
Thread the bolts up from the bottom so you can adjust while the wok is on them

Just my .02!

Good idea Brad! Not sure how long of tension bolts he has but will check when back over Memorial Day. Like the idea of being able to adjust - good one!

Any others? I know we got some engineers here so I expect some blueprints are being drawn up! :)

Another suggestion is an all thread nut/bolt screwed on top of existing bolts. Will have to see if Ace Hardware has something this size.

^^^^^^^ this

I\'m an enginerd, and this is the easiest answer I see. moving nuts to inside will raise it a little. using longer, threaded bolts will offer more adjustment range.

add a 2nd nut to each bolt to \"lock\" the bolt length once you\'re happy with it.

alternatively, you can just use longer threaded bolts, and continue to use the nuts in their present locations.

Just from looking at your photos, I\'d guess that there is no adjustment on your wok. So why not weld 6 - 1/2 inch nuts on the outside of the rim between each to the existing post. Then use 1/2 inch all thread to raise and lower the disc blade. Give the all thread a squirt of WD-40 after each use as the heat may make them hard to turn over time.

By the way, my new cam arrived today. Cute little booger. It\'s about an inch shorter and an inch narrower than my stealthcams.

What kind of camera did you get??????

I here those are good... I\'ve used Covert MP6 Blacks for several years and they are great for what I use them for... No post card pictures but they do tell me what deer and other critters are in the area we hunt...

back home we called that a \"camal\" (kah-maul)

why cant you just get some tube steel and place them over the bolts? cut them to length to gain you the needed elevation. remove when you want to go high and hot.

Cliff, that was my third thought and likely the route I\'ll try first. It\'s the easiest and likely cheapest since I don\'t have a welder. But, going back to OK over Memorial and could do it there with my Dad.

I\'ve also got a more shallow disc that doesn\'t have the spindle hole welded up and use it for a lid.

Great for tailgating! Need to make some chili and send to WW!

With the lid, that\'s a heavy set up!! Nice way to hold heat.

You can get them in EP cheap but only after they are worn down smaller than yours.

Appreciate the replies and will definitely look into the adjustable version down the road. I went with the least expensive/time consuming and bought 4 - 3\" x 3/4\" nipple to slip over existing bolts. Wrapped heavy duty foil on threads to make a snug fit.

Was able to adjust flame to cook an egg in 3-4 mins so should work for now!

looks great. I didnt realize it was the bolts that were welded to the ring.

looks like a good solution to me.
