Been registered here for awhile and reading the posts. Going to Colorado this fall for an archery hunt. I was on unit 55 for four days in 2009. Not much of a hunt really just seen a lot of people and heard one bugle. I didn\'t research or know anything about elk hunting at the time. This year I am going by myself and have immersed myself into learning all I can about elk. I had a knee replacement in January but my recovery has been awesome and I\'ve been working out pretty much every other day since February. My only concern is the amount of weight I can put on my back, my doctor thinks 100lbs may be too much for the knee. Guess I\'ll have to kill a bull to find out. I do know I still have so much gear yet to buy and a budget/wife/16 year old son/ to balance as well. It\'s all a challenge but that\'s what makes it fun. I\'ve already had some messages from members on here with some great advice and I\'m very thankful. I feel like I\'m ahead of the game so far but who knows what it will be like when I actually get boots on the ground. I know I can\'t wait.

Steve, glad to hear the knee has recovered well.

If you pace yourself, you\'ll probably find your body feels awesome by the time the hunt is over. Just hunt smarter, not harder. It just takes one dumazz slip to screw up all that rehab, and you\'ll probably see more game if you move slower anyhow. A trekking pole can really help!

As far as packing out...just do more trips with lighter loads. I\'ve had quarters hanging in the shade in fair weather for up to three days, and never experienced any kind of spoilage.

Looking forward to hearing about your hunt!

I agree, know your limits and take it slow! The last thing you want is to have to replace it again :downthumb:
I wish you the best of luck on your hunt though and look forward to hearing about your trip.

I would also love to see a thread on some monster MO whitetails that you will be getting this year :dance2:

Not many monsters in southeast Missouri. I killed a 161 last October with my bow. Shocked a lot of people. Nobody expected a buck like that around here, especially on public land. They are few and far in between but if you go north 150 miles they are a little more common.
